Does a split unit need cleaning on both the indoor and outdoor sides? Scope on both sides and site restrictions

Contents

The indoor and outdoor parts of a split unit are in different locations. Whether both need cleaning, and whether both are included in the same quote, depends on the level of dirt, the model, and the site conditions. If the outdoor unit is at a height or cannot be safely reached, it should be assessed first, and residents should not wash it themselves.

Preparation before AC cleaning

Please provide the indoor unit model, outdoor unit location, number of units and the original fault. Photos should be taken from a safe position; no need to prepare screwdrivers or chemicals for dismantling, and do not open the casing or lean out of the window to take photos.

The indoor filter is different from the inside of the machine

Residents should only handle filters that can be removed and safely touched according to the model manual; whether they can be washed, the materials used and the drying method all depend on manufacturer requirements. There is no fixed 15-minute soak for all units, and the casing should not be removed.

2. Clean the inside of the air conditioner

Have the service staff assess the indoor heat exchanger, blower wheel, drain pan and areas near the control board. Do not insert a wet cloth, sponge or chemicals into the unit; when cooling a split AC, the indoor evaporator and outdoor condenser should also not be referred to interchangeably.

3. Clear the outdoor unit

The access method, support, height, and heat dissipation conditions of the outdoor unit should be explained first. Cleaning protection and wastewater handling will be arranged by service staff. Residents should not dismantle the power supply, brush it, rinse it, clear the drain outlet, or climb to reach the outdoor unit themselves.

4. The importance of regular maintenance

Filter and internal maintenance should be arranged according to the manual, usage and dirt buildup, and not always as a full cleaning every quarter. A properly sealed refrigerant system does not need regular top-ups; if there is a fault, inspect it first, and do not treat refrigerant work as routine cleaning.

Indoor and outdoor work cannot be done by the resident just because they are familiar with home cleaning. When booking, ask whether both sides are included, how special locations are assessed, and whether drainage and repairs are charged separately.

First separate the location and the work, then compare quotes. Cleaning addresses dirt within the confirmed scope, and does not promise every job will extend lifespan, save electricity, or solve all odour, leakage or cooling problems.
