AC TOOL

Comparing the cost of repairing versus replacing an air conditioner

Enter the actual repair quote, the new unit with installation fee, hours of use and old/new power consumption to compare the cost over the specified period and the simple payback period.

Repair or replacement should be compared using the full quotation, the condition of the unit, and operating cost; it cannot be decided by age alone or by a fixed percentage. This tool compares only the cost scenarios you enter.

Calculation method

  1. Repair option = actual total repair quotation + annual electricity cost for the old-unit scenario × comparison period; replacement option = total cost of new unit plus installation and old-unit removal + annual electricity cost for the new-unit scenario × period.
  2. For the total repair quotation, please enter the final amount after any inspection fee waiver agreed by both parties; the tool will not add HK$500 again to avoid duplicate charges.
  3. Simple energy payback period = extra upfront cost of replacing the unit instead of repairing it ÷ annual electricity bill difference under the scenario; if the difference is not positive, no positive payback period will be provided.
  4. We do not predict future failure rates, remaining service life, refrigerant loss, depreciation, maintenance costs, or extra works not yet provided. Repairs do not come with maintenance, and installation maintenance terms do not apply.
  5. Old and new power consumption must be compared on the same basis; rated input power scenarios cannot be treated as a guaranteed energy-saving amount. The age of the unit is background information only and does not automatically determine whether replacement is needed.

Frequently asked questions

Must an old unit be replaced once it reaches a certain age?
No. The age of the unit alone does not prove its remaining service life. Its condition, parts availability, repair quote, usage needs and installation constraints still need to be checked.
What items should be included in replacement fees?
Please enter the total of the new unit, installation, removal of the old unit, and any known necessary work. Unconfirmed costs such as scaffolding, piping and power supply should be requested in a full quotation first; otherwise the result is only a partial cost comparison.
