AC TIPS & ADVICE

Outdoor air conditioner unit not running? Check the settings first, then arrange a fault inspection

Contents

Airflow from the indoor unit does not mean the cooling system is operating normally. First distinguish whether the indoor fan is still running, the outdoor fan is not turning, or the whole unit is unresponsive. Based on sound or a stopped fan alone, it is not possible to diagnose a compressor, motor, capacitor or control board fault.

First check the settings, do not dismantle the unit first

Check from the normal operating position whether the remote control is set to cooling mode, not fan mode or timed shutoff, and confirm whether the set temperature meets the cooling requirement in the manufacturer’s instructions.

If it has just been restarted, follow the model’s instructions to check whether there is a start-up protection function; do not assume all models have the same waiting time, and do not repeatedly switch it on and off to force startup.

Record whether the indoor unit has airflow, indicator lights or an error code, and whether the problem is continuous or intermittent. Observations should be made only from a safe position; do not climb the exterior wall or lean out of the window to check the outdoor unit.

Reasons that may require professional inspection

  • Abnormal power supply or wiring: including issues with the unit's power supply, connections and protection devices
  • Starting or control component abnormality: different systems use different parts and control methods, so it cannot be assumed to be a capacitor fault
  • Fan or compressor problem: inspection is needed; do not assume the entire unit needs replacement just because the fan is not turning
  • System protection or other faults: must be confirmed according to original fault data and on-site inspection

The above is guidance for inspection only, not instructions for users to open the electrical box, measure voltage, short-circuit wiring or replace parts themselves. Do not use your hands or tools to push the outdoor fan, or operate the refrigerant system yourself.

Use of the equipment should stop in these situations

If there is a burning smell, smoke, sparks, obvious abnormal noise, repeated tripping, or wet electrical parts, stop using the unit and have it checked by a qualified person. Do not keep resetting the breaker or restarting it. If there is an immediate fire risk, seek emergency help; do not wait for an online quote reply.

ViewUsing the remote control and taking photos from a safe position is different from live testing, dismantling the unit or carrying out repairs. Repairing or replacing sockets, wiring and switches should not be treated as a step for residents to check themselves.

Enquire about BeforeWhat can I prepare?

  • Area, brand and model, and whether it is a window or split-type unit
  • Whether there is airflow indoors, whether there is cold air, and under what conditions the fault occurs
  • Error code and photos taken from a safe position
  • Outdoor unit location, accessibility, and any known management office work arrangements

Overseas information cannot be copied directly to every air conditioner in Hong Kong

Some reference materials are for overseas central air-conditioning systems. This article does not treat their electrical boxes, furnace units, reset buttons, fixed filter replacement cycles or overseas repair prices as universal rules for all Hong Kong window units and split units. Actual operation still requires checking the manual for your own unit.

Reference sources and applicable scope

This article provides a preliminary guide only and does not replace an on-site diagnosis. Original manufacturer functions and operation apply only to the corresponding model; please refer to your own unit's manual. For fixed electrical installations, inspection should be arranged by a registered electrical contractor.
