AC GUIDES

Unusual AC noises: how to tell water flow, vibration, and abnormal rubbing sounds apart

Contents

When an AC makes unusual noises, look at the type of sound, where it comes from, when it happens, and whether it gets louder. Some models may produce noise from refrigerant flow, louver movement, or material expansion and contraction. If the noise suddenly becomes loud, continues as rubbing or impact, or comes with abnormal vibration, stop the unit and arrange an inspection; you cannot determine which part needs replacement based on sound alone.

When should you stop the machine first?

If there is sharp rubbing, obvious impact, strong vibration, or a burning smell, smoke and tripped breaker at the same time, stop using it first. Do not reach in to hold parts in place, insert tools into the air outlet, or keep the unit running to record the abnormal sound.

What safety checks can users do first?

  1. From a safe position, note whether the unusual noise comes from the indoor unit, outdoor unit, wall or piping; do not climb out of the window, remove the ceiling cover, or go near the operating outdoor unit.
  2. Think back to whether the sound happens on startup, shutdown, when the airflow vane moves, or throughout operation, and whether it has suddenly become louder recently. If you are unfamiliar with the sound or it keeps happening, please ask the manufacturer or a technician.
  3. After switching off the unit and following the original manufacturer's instructions to cut power, only check whether the user-serviceable filter is installed correctly according to the instructions and whether anything around it is touching the unit; do not twist brackets or remove internal parts yourself.
  4. If you already have a recording or short video, you may provide it together with the symptoms. If there is an abnormal impact sound, rubbing sound or severe vibration, stop the unit first and do not restart it just to record or film it.

What are the common causes?

These are troubleshooting directions, not a diagnosis based on symptoms alone. Different brands, models and installation environments may require different handling.

Operating stages and model-specific sounds

Some original manufacturer manuals mention refrigerant flow, valve movement, air guide vanes or expansion and contraction sounds from materials, but not all water sounds or clicking sounds can be treated as normal. Judgement must be based on the specific model instructions, changes in sound level and other symptoms.

Blower wheel, fan or other part abnormality

Dirt, foreign objects, worn parts or placement issues may be related to friction and unusual noise. A recording alone cannot confirm whether the motor or compressor is damaged; this should be checked by a technician, and do not reach in to clean the fan wheel yourself.

Vibration of the unit body, bracket or surrounding area

Vibration may be transmitted from the unit to the wall or nearby items, and may also involve fixing and installation issues. The outdoor bracket and fixing parts require a safety assessment; do not go out of the window to tighten them or prop them up with random objects.

Sounds related to drainage or airflow

Some enclosed spaces, drainage arrangements or air outlet conditions may produce airflow or gurgling sounds. If this is accompanied by dripping water, weak airflow, or abnormal noise after a recent installation, the environment and drainage should be checked together; do not decide on the fix based on sound alone.

Should the AC be cleaned, or should repair be arranged?

What cleaning can address

If there is obvious dust build-up and weak airflow, you can ask for a cleaning assessment, but the source of the noise must be identified first. Cleaning does not mean worn, loose, or damaged air delivery parts can be repaired.

Situations requiring further inspection

If the sound suddenly becomes louder, there is continuous rubbing, knocking or severe vibration, or if a new noise appears after recent installation, check for a fault or installation issue first. Whether parts need replacement can only be confirmed on-site.

For commercial four-way ceiling cassettes, ducted systems and other systems, provide the model, maintenance location and business environment. WhatsApp EnquiryWhat do I need to prepare?

Please provide the model, explain where the noise is coming from, whether it appears on start-up, shut-down or during operation, and whether it is continuous. Also provide the airflow and cooling condition, plus any recent cleaning or installation records; if you have an audio or short video clip, you may send it too, but it cannot replace an on-site diagnosis.

Photos and short videos only provide initial clues; the actual cause and scope of work must be confirmed by inspection. For repairs, please refer to the service page for inspection/site visit fees and any waiver arrangements. We do not assume part prices or that cleaning will definitely solve the fault.

Other symptoms at the same time?

Common questions

If an AC makes a water-flow sound, does that mean it is definitely broken?

Not necessarily. Some models may make noise from refrigerant flow, drainage or airflow, but this must be judged according to the model and accompanying symptoms. If the sound suddenly becomes louder, stays abnormal, or is accompanied by dripping or poor cooling, please ask for an inspection.

Can clicking sounds or plastic casing sounds be ignored?

It cannot be ignored in all cases. Some start-stop sounds or louvre movements may be normal for the model, but new, persistent, very loud sounds, or sounds with other abnormalities, need to be checked.

Will AC cleaning make the air conditioner quieter?

If the dirt is related to airflow or the fan wheel, cleaning may improve some of the noise; wear, loose parts, or component faults require other treatment. It cannot be promised that the unit will definitely be silent after cleaning.

The outdoor unit is shaking badly. Can I tighten the bracket myself?

Do not handle it yourself. Outdoor locations, bracket support, and operating parts involve safety risks. Stop abnormal operation first and arrange professional inspection; do not go out the window or force it in place with objects.

Can I get a motor replacement quote just by sending a video?

A short video can help explain the symptoms, but it cannot determine which part has failed. The model and an on-site inspection are needed to confirm the cause and scope of work before a reliable quote can be given.

Original manufacturer functions and operation apply only to the corresponding model; please refer to your own unit's manual. For fixed electrical installations, inspection should be arranged by a registered electrical contractor.
