Repair or replace: how to compare cost and machine condition

Contents

If an air conditioner breaks down, it does not mean an old unit must always be replaced or that repairs must always be cheap. First identify which part is faulty, then compare the repairability, total cost, and usage needs before making a decision.

1. First identify the scope of the fault

A problem with a single component or drainage, and problems involving the compressor, control system, or multiple components at the same time, can require very different repair solutions. The age of the unit is only background information and cannot replace an actual inspection.

You may ask the technician to explain the confirmed fault, the recommended scope of work, and any issues that still need further testing. Do not assume a costly part must be damaged just because of unusual noise or insufficient cooling.

2. What can be solved after repair?

Understand which fault this repair is for, whether there are still other ageing or unresolved issues, and also confirm whether the parts are suitable, available, and the expected arrangement.

A problem that has recurred often in the past is worth assessing together with its records. However, one repair should not be treated as a full-unit replacement, and it should not be guaranteed that once one part is fixed, the other parts will not have problems again.

3. When replacing an AC, calculate the full project cost, not just the unit price

  • The price of the unit itself, its capacity, and whether it suits the space.
  • Whether removal, transport and disposal of the old unit are included.
  • Whether the piping, insulation, drainage and power supply need to be modified for the new unit.
  • Outdoor work, scaffolding, access route inspection, or other site work.

If you compare only the price of the new unit and overlook installation and additional work, you may underestimate the total replacement cost. Whether old pipes, old brackets, and the power supply can be reused must be assessed first; it cannot be assumed that everything can be kept.

4. Usage needs and waiting time also have an impact

A frequently used bedroom, an operating shop, and a room used only occasionally have different requirements for downtime and cooling capacity. Consider parts waiting time, work scheduling, and current needs together; do not compare only one amount.

If you want to improve energy efficiency by replacing the unit, you should compare product information for suitable models, actual usage time, and total cost; no fixed electricity-saving percentage can be promised, and no guarantee can be given that the investment will be recovered within a certain period.

5. Check maintenance and charges item by item

Manufacturer warranties, installation workmanship warranties, and repair service terms are different. Our repair service does not include a warranty; do not apply the warranty period of other services to repairs.

Please check the maintenance service page for the current inspection/attendance fee, the reduction after you agree to repair, and the quotation arrangement. "Can be deducted from repair fees" does not mean cash is refunded unconditionally.

6. Prepare a comparison checklist before deciding

Compare side by side: confirmed faults, repair scope and total cost, unresolved issues, and parts arrangements, against new-unit specifications, full installation cost, extra works, warranty, and installation arrangements. Do not use a fixed unit age or a certain percentage as the replacement threshold for all air conditioners.

How do I apply the guide to my own unit?

First check the brand, model and manufacturer’s instructions; this article is for initial assessment and enquiry direction only, and does not replace on-site diagnosis. Different models, work locations and existing issues affect the project scope, and you cannot directly copy the procedures from another unit.

Common questions

If the AC has been used for several years, does it have to be replaced?

There is no fixed service life that applies to all models. Compare the cause of the fault, parts availability, repair work, unit condition, energy efficiency and the conditions for installing a new unit, instead of looking only at the age.

Can I get a fixed repair price first before deciding?

When the cause and scope of work are not yet confirmed, a fixed parts replacement price cannot be guaranteed. You can first confirm the inspection/service call fee and the quotation method, then compare the full scope of repair and replacement options.

Reference sources and applicable scope

This article provides a preliminary guide only and does not replace an on-site diagnosis. Original manufacturer functions and operation apply only to the corresponding model; please refer to your own unit's manual. For fixed electrical installations, inspection should be arranged by a registered electrical contractor.
