What is included in an air conditioner installation quote: when extra charges apply

Contents

“Basic installation” does not mean every job on site is included. For split-type units, the copper pipe used for refrigerant flow, the drain pipe used to remove condensate, as well as the power supply and installation location, all affect the scope of work. The methods for window units and split-type units are different. Before comparing quotations, confirm whether each item is included.

1. First confirm the model and the purpose of the work

The work required for installing a new unit, replacing at the same location, relocating, or removing an old unit can be different. Providing the full model, capacity, quantity, whether there is an old unit, and the indoor/outdoor locations makes assessment easier than simply saying "install one air conditioner".

A window unit requires checking the opening, support and connection conditions; a split unit involves the indoor and outdoor unit positions, piping, drainage and power supply. The actual work scope still needs to be confirmed according to the applicable model and site conditions.

Installing a split unit is not just about mounting the indoor unit. Before work begins, confirm the matching model, management requirements, support, and pipe route; during installation, suitable personnel should handle fixing, connections, and required tests according to the manufacturer's requirements; after completion, recheck drainage, operation, and handover records. This is a checklist for checking the project stages with the installer, not a guide for residents to drill walls, connect power, or open refrigerant valves themselves, and it does not mean every item is included in the basic installation fee.

2. What items should be clearly listed in the quotation?

  • Unit installation and connection, and the applicable materials, route and scope.
  • Whether dismantling the old unit, transporting it and disposing of it are included.
  • Arrangements for pipework, insulation, drainage, support, or bracket handling.
  • Outdoor work, scaffolding, access restrictions, and other extra work.
  • Completion test run, project maintenance and excluded items.

This checklist is for checking the quotation and does not mean every item is necessarily included in the basic installation. Whether each item is included should be based on the confirmed service scope and quotation.

3. How do pipes and outdoor locations affect the cost?

If pipes need extending or replacement, the route changed, insulation or drainage handled, materials and work steps may increase. If the outdoor unit is hard to reach safely, scaffold or a suitable access route may also need to be arranged separately.

Photos can help with an initial assessment, but they may not capture hidden pipework or all site restrictions. If the actual site conditions differ from the original information, the changes and fees should be explained first; do not treat unclear items as included by default.

4. Existing power connection differs from installing a new power supply

Using an existing suitable power supply connection and running a new power line from the main switch to the unit are different works. Our basic installation does not include running a new power line from the main switch to the unit; if the existing power supply cannot match the new unit, a separate arrangement must be confirmed first.

Do not increase the fuse rating, alter the wiring, or use an unsuitable extension lead in place of the required power supply. Power conditions and modifications should be assessed and handled by suitable professionals.

5. How should changes to the quotation be handled?

The quotation is based on the model, location and scope of work already provided. If the site requires extra piping, a new power supply, scaffolding or similar work, we will explain the reason and update the quotation first. Related work will only proceed after the customer agrees.

Current quotation validity, basic works and installation warranty terms can be checked on the installation service page. Product manufacturer warranty and installation warranty should be understood separately; one cannot be treated as coverage for all faults.

6. What photos should I take before making an enquiry?

Prepare full-view photos of the indoor wall or window installation, a safe outdoor angle for photography, existing pipe routes, nearby power supply and the model numbers of the new and old units. Add any building access or work restrictions, but do not lean out of the window, climb, or open the distribution box just for photos.

How do I apply the guide to my own unit?

First check the brand, model and manufacturer’s instructions; this article is for initial assessment and enquiry direction only, and does not replace on-site diagnosis. Different models, work locations and existing issues affect the project scope, and you cannot directly copy the procedures from another unit.

Common questions

Does basic installation include running a new power supply?

Not included. Our basic installation, extra piping, brackets, and other work items must be confirmed according to the service page and quotation; work on fixed electrical installations must be arranged by the appropriate registered electrical contractor.

Is one indoor-unit photo enough to quote for all work?

Usually not enough. You also need the outdoor location, drainage, piping, old unit removal, power supply and access information; hidden locations may need on-site confirmation. Do not climb up just for photos.

Reference sources and applicable scope

This article provides a preliminary guide only and does not replace an on-site diagnosis. Original manufacturer functions and operation apply only to the corresponding model; please refer to your own unit's manual. For fixed electrical installations, inspection should be arranged by a registered electrical contractor.
