AC GUIDES

Can an existing copper pipe, drain pipe and power supply be reused when replacing the AC?

Contents

Some site conditions may be kept, but you should not decide based only on "the old unit still works" or "the pipe looks fine outside". New and old models, refrigerant, and installation requirements may differ, so the copper pipe (the copper tube carrying refrigerant), drain pipe (the pipe that removes condensate), and power supply must be assessed separately.

1. For copper pipes, first check the new unit's original factory requirements

The new unit may have specific requirements for pipe diameter, material, thickness, length and connections. An old pipe that worked with another unit does not mean it is suitable for a new brand, model or refrigerant system.

Whether existing piping can be reused should be confirmed according to the new unit’s installation instructions and on-site assessment. It cannot be stated broadly that all inverter units must have the piping replaced, nor can it be guaranteed that all old piping can be connected directly.

2. Hidden conditions can also affect judgment

Whether the old pipe has leaks, damage, contamination, previous repairs or an unsuitable route may not be visible from a short exposed section. Aging insulation, connection points and maintenance access should also be considered.

If inspection, testing, insulation replacement, or other work is needed, the procedure and limitations should be stated first. If concealed piping is hard to inspect, do not treat “no problem seen” as proof that it is safe or suitable.

3. The drain pipe is assessed separately

Drain pipes should be assessed for route, slope, condition, connections and the drainage design of the new unit; some systems may involve a drain pump. Reusing the refrigerant copper pipe does not mean the drainage arrangement has also been confirmed.

If there has been past water leakage, poor drainage, or a bad smell, please say so before replacement. Do not assume that installing a new unit will automatically solve problems with the old drain pipe.

4. The power supply must meet the new unit's requirements

The model, power requirements and connection method may change, so the existing wiring, protection devices and connection conditions must be checked for suitability. A similar-looking plug or switch does not mean the entire power arrangement is suitable.

Power supply inspection and modification should be handled by suitable professionals. Do not increase the fuse rating yourself, rewire, or use a power strip instead of the required work. Running a new power line from the main switch to the unit is not included in this company’s basic installation scope and must be confirmed separately first.

5. Ask for a quote that clearly separates the three possible outcomes

  • You may consider continuing to use:Which parts have been confirmed suitable to keep, and the scope of assessment.
  • Need to be handled before deciding:State the testing, inspection, or improvement work without promising reuse in advance.
  • Not suitable to continue:Explain the cause, replacement scope, and any additional material or labour charges.

If hidden areas can only be confirmed after the old unit is removed, this uncertainty should be explained first; if additional works are found, approval should then be obtained according to the confirmed quotation handling method.

6. What information should be provided before replacement?

Provide the new and old model numbers, the current indoor and outdoor unit locations, photos of the piping and power supply that can be safely seen, and any past records of water leakage, refrigerant leakage or repairs. Do not cut the pipes, open the refrigerant valve, remove the electrical box, or remove the ceiling to look for piping on your own.

How do I apply the guide to my own unit?

First check the brand, model and manufacturer’s instructions; this article is for initial assessment and enquiry direction only, and does not replace on-site diagnosis. Different models, work locations and existing issues affect the project scope, and you cannot directly copy the procedures from another unit.

Common questions

If the old copper pipe has no water leak, can it be reused directly?

You cannot use the absence of visible dripping as a guarantee. Check the refrigerant, pipe diameter, length, pressure resistance, insulation, connections and internal condition, and assess according to the manufacturer's requirements for a new unit.

Does reusing the piping definitely cost less?

Not necessarily. Inspection, repair, and possible re-connection work are different, and the risk of unsuitable reuse cannot be ignored. Compare the full quoted price after confirmation.

Reference sources and applicable scope

This article provides a preliminary guide only and does not replace an on-site diagnosis. Original manufacturer functions and operation apply only to the corresponding model; please refer to your own unit's manual. For fixed electrical installations, inspection should be arranged by a registered electrical contractor.
