Does your AC smell as soon as it turns on? How to tell mouldy, sour and burning smells apart
Contents
If your AC smells musty or unusual, first distinguish between mouldy, sour, and burning smells, and note whether it appears when the unit starts, throughout operation, or after shutdown. A mouldy smell may be related to moisture, dirt, or drainage, and environmental odours may also be drawn in. A burning smell should be checked with the unit turned off; it cannot be treated as a normal cleaning issue.
When should you stop the machine first?
If you smell a burning or melted-plastic odour, or if there is smoke or a tripped breaker, stop using it. Do not keep switching it on to find the source, and do not mask it with fragrance or cleaning products. If there is smoke, fire or an immediate danger, move away first and seek emergency help.
What safety checks can users do first?
- Record the type of smell, when it appeared, how long it lasted, and whether it only appears in one mode; do not lean close to the unit to smell inside, and do not keep using an AC with a burning smell just to test it.
- In a safe situation, note whether nearby kitchens, drains, renovation materials or other surroundings also have the same smell. Room odours may be drawn into the unit and blown back out, and may not be caused entirely by the air conditioner.
- After switching off the unit and following the original manufacturer's instructions to cut power, inspect and clean the dust filter that users are allowed to handle, and reinstall it only when fully dry; from the ground, check whether the grille has visible dust buildup, dripping water, or stains.
- Do not spray perfume, bleach, or homemade cleaning mixtures into the unit. Cleaning sprays may not be suitable for that model, and may also affect the internal materials and drainage.
What are the common causes?
These are troubleshooting directions, not a diagnosis based on symptoms alone. Different brands, models and installation environments may require different handling.
Moisture and dirt inside the unit
Condensate and dust build-up may cause odours from the blower wheel, heat exchanger or drip area. A persistent mouldy smell is worth checking inside the unit and the drainage condition, but smell alone cannot confirm the location of contamination, and cleaning the unit should not be described as a treatment for allergies or illness.
Drain outlet or surrounding odour
Drainage problems, nearby drain openings, cooking fumes or room materials can all affect the smell. Even if the unit is cleaned, external sources that are not addressed may cause the odour to return, so they need to be identified based on the actual situation.
Specific functions or operating stages
The drying, anti-mildew or air treatment functions on some models may change how odours are perceived during specific stages. Check the manual for your model first, and do not take one brand’s normal explanation as a universal conclusion for all air conditioners.
Abnormal appliances or components
A burning smell or melted-plastic smell, especially when accompanied by tripping, is a sign to stop the unit. You cannot judge which part is damaged by smell alone; arrange a professional inspection. For fixed electrical installations, it must be handled by a registered electrical contractor.
Should the AC be cleaned, or should repair be arranged?
What cleaning can address
If there is a persistent musty smell, visible dust buildup, or the unit has not been cleaned for a long time, you can enquire about deep cleaning and explain the drainage and environmental conditions. Whether cleaning can improve it depends on the real source, and we cannot guarantee that all odours will disappear at once.
Situations requiring further inspection
If there is a burning smell, melted-plastic smell, tripping, drainage failure, or recurring odours even after cleaning, first assess whether repair or another source is the issue. Do not assume every sour smell means low refrigerant, and do not handle refrigerant yourself based on smell alone.

WhatsApp EnquiryWhat do I need to prepare?
Provide the type of smell, when it appears, usage pattern, unit model, date of last cleaning, and whether there is dripping, unusual noise, or tripping. Photos can show dirt and the unit model, but they cannot confirm the source of the smell.
Photos and short videos only provide initial clues; the actual cause and scope of work must be confirmed by inspection. For repairs, please refer to the service page for inspection/site visit fees and any waiver arrangements. We do not assume part prices or that cleaning will definitely solve the fault.

Common questions
If the AC has a mouldy smell, is cleaning the dust filter enough?
Not necessarily. Odour may come from the fan wheel, heat exchanger, drain pan area or room environment, not only the filter. If the smell remains after cleaning the filter, the source should be checked again; filter cleaning is not the same as deep cleaning the whole unit.
Does a sour smell from the air conditioner always mean a refrigerant leak?
No. You cannot determine a refrigerant leak by sour smell alone; damp dirt, drainage, and the environment may also be factors. If it is also not cold enough or there are other abnormalities, provide the full symptoms for inspection and do not add refrigerant yourself.
Can I spray fragrance or cleaning spray to remove the smell?
Do not spray anything into the unit. Fragrance can only mask the problem, and ordinary cleaning sprays may not be suitable for the materials inside the unit. Follow the manufacturer’s instructions for routine cleaning, and if the odour persists, identify the source.
If the AC smells burnt but is still blowing cold air, can it keep running?
Do not continue using it. Cool air does not mean the appliance is safe. Stop the unit and do not keep testing it. If there are signs of smoke or burning, move away from danger first and seek emergency assistance.
If the AC smells again after cleaning, does that mean it was not cleaned properly?
Not necessarily. The cause may be environmental, drainage-related, or from another unresolved source. Provide the service provider with the recurrence time, type of smell and related symptoms, and let them inspect based on the actual situation; you cannot judge the cleaning result by smell alone.
