Do you need to open windows when using the AC? The difference between cooling and indoor ventilation
Contents
General domestic split-type and window-type air conditioners mainly circulate and regulate indoor air, so you cannot assume there is enough fresh air just because the air conditioner is on. When people are using the room, ventilation arrangements should still be considered according to the space and actual conditions; fatigue or breathing discomfort also cannot be judged as caused solely by closing the windows.
Benefits of opening windows with the AC on
Keeping windows open for long periods during cooling increases air exchange between indoors and outdoors and increases the cooling load. Ventilation can be arranged according to the weather, outdoor air quality, window safety and room usage; do not apply a fixed number of minutes or every-few-hours rule to everyone. An air purifier’s filtration is different from ventilation, and filtration alone cannot replace fresh air.
Find professional help
Dust accumulation on the filter and inside the unit should be handled according to the model, but cleaning does not replace ventilation design and cannot guarantee relief from physical discomfort. When enquiring, you can explain the room use, number of people, current ventilation method and equipment condition; if discomfort continues, seek medical advice and do not treat air conditioner cleaning as a cure.
