What charges apply when hiring a technician to install a self-bought air conditioner?
Contents
With the popularity of online shopping and large appliance chains, more and more owners choose to buy their preferred air conditioner themselves and then separately hire a professional installer to carry out the work on site. However, AC installation costs are often not limited to the so-called "basic installation fee". Many additional items required by the on-site environment can affect the final overall cost. Understanding the common cost components can make budgeting clearer.
Scope of services included in the basic installation fee
Generally speaking, when you buy your own air conditioner, whether it is a window or split type, the technician will first charge a basic installation fee. For a window unit, the basic installation usually includes removing the old unit, securing the new unit onto the existing concrete window ledge or standard metal bracket, sealing with silicone to prevent leaks, and connecting the power supply. For a split type, the basic installation generally includes wall-mounting the indoor and outdoor units, and connecting the refrigerant pipes with insulation within the specified length. Note that each contractor defines “basic” differently, and the included pipe length also varies, so it is worth confirming with the technician before work begins.
Scaffolding or high-altitude work charges caused by the site environment
When installing a split-type air conditioner in Hong Kong, the outdoor unit’s location is often the key factor affecting cost. If the building has not reserved a spacious air-conditioner platform, the technician may need to work on the exterior wall at height. To comply with Labour Department safety guidelines, a metal safety scaffold often needs to be erected separately. This cost usually includes the scaffold application, insurance, and the erection and dismantling work. Even if scaffolding is not required, if the installation location is at a dangerous height, involves a hanging ceiling setup, or requires an extra-long ladder, a specific labour surcharge may still apply.
Additional charge for extending refrigerant piping and accessories beyond the standard scope
The indoor and outdoor units of a split AC need to be connected by refrigerant copper pipes, control signal cables and drain pipes. Each unit is usually supplied with only a specific pipe length in the basic installation, such as 10 to 15 feet. If the unit is large, or if the outdoor unit needs to be routed to a farther location for aesthetic reasons, the extra copper pipe, insulation and signal cable beyond the standard length will be charged separately for materials and labour, per foot or per metre. In addition, if the drain pipe needs to be extended to a specific drain point, an extension charge will also apply.
Charges for wall drilling and decorative renovation works
When installing a split-type air conditioner, the pipework must pass through the wall to connect the indoor and outdoor units. If the building does not have a ready-made wall opening, or if the existing opening is not the right size, the technician will need to use professional tools to drill a hole. Charges for drilling will vary depending on the wall material (such as lightweight brick walls or reinforced concrete shear walls) and thickness. If, for aesthetics, you ask the technician to conceal the pipework inside a custom PVC decorative trunking (pipe cover), the trunking and elbow materials, as well as installation, are also common optional extras.
Disposal of the old unit, transportation and other minor miscellaneous items
Before installing a new unit, the existing old air conditioner usually needs to be removed first. This involves a removal fee. If the building has no lift and the unit must be carried down the stairs, or if the car park is too far from the building lift lobby, there may also be a stair fee or long-distance carrying fee. In addition, although the government has implemented a statutory removal service, if the installer needs to take away and dispose of the old unit immediately, a specific waste disposal fee may also apply. Finally, if the unit's power supply wiring, switchgear or socket location cannot meet the new unit's power requirements, any electrical work involving changing the distribution board or running new wiring will be charged separately according to the complexity of each item.
Seek help from a professional team
Air conditioner installation involves many charges that vary by site conditions, and it can sometimes be difficult to estimate all hidden items accurately by visual inspection alone. Choosing a professional air conditioning team can effectively avoid unnecessary charging disputes during the works. With a professional to tailor the safest installation plan for you, your new air conditioner can operate properly and the process of purchasing your own appliance becomes more reassuring.
