Causes of water leakage after AC cleaning

Contents

Many owners arrange regular professional cleaning to keep their AC running smoothly in summer. However, some customers find that after AC cleaning, the indoor unit starts dripping or leaking water. This can be confusing and frustrating. In fact, leakage after cleaning does not necessarily mean the unit is damaged. In many cases, it is closely related to dirt shifting during the cleaning process, the original condition of the drain pipe, or minor adjustments to nearby parts during reassembly.

During cleaning, soft sludge and dirt may shift and get stuck in the pipes

With long-term use, a large amount of dust, hair, and mold can build up inside an air conditioner. When these impurities mix with condensate, they form a sticky, jelly-like sludge in the drain pan. During deep cleaning, most dirt will be washed away, but sometimes stubborn dirt that has hardened in corners may loosen under water flow. If these loosened particles enter the drain and get stuck at a bend or narrow section, the pipe can become blocked immediately, preventing condensate from draining properly and causing it to overflow from the drain pan.

An existing drain pipe that has already aged or become brittle shifts due to slight movement

The drain pipe of a split AC is usually hidden inside the wall or decorative trunking. As the years pass, some plastic drain pipes may harden, become brittle or have loose joints. During AC cleaning, the technician needs to remove the casing and move the water tray to clean the blower wheel and aluminium fins inside. In this process, even though the movement is very slight, if the drain pipe is already close to severe ageing, a small vibration or slight change in position may cause cracks at the already fragile connection, or alter the slope of the drain pipe, leading to leakage.

The condensate tray outlet and drain pipe are not fully connected

When cleaning a split-type AC, the drain pan usually needs to be loosened or partially removed to allow access to the space behind it for cleaning. After cleaning and reassembly, the connection between the drain outlet and the building drain pipe must align precisely. If the site is cramped, or if the waterproof gasket at the joint shifts or is not fully secured during reinstallation, then when the unit runs again and produces a large amount of condensate, water may slowly seep out from this joint gap, causing leakage after cleaning.

Air trapped inside the drain pipe forms an air lock and obstructs water flow

In certain drainage designs, if the drain pipe route is long and has many bends, the cleaning process may involve a large volume of water being rapidly flushed in and out, which can draw air into the pipe and create an Air Lock at specific bends. This is similar to some pipes trapping air when water supply resumes after an interruption. When an air pocket becomes trapped in the middle of the pipe, it creates slight resistance, preventing weak condensate from pushing through the air lock by gravity. The water then flows back into the indoor unit's drain tray, causing leakage.

Importance of immediate testing and daily observation after cleaning

Generally speaking, professional cleaning procedures include a drainage test before completion to ensure the drainage system is working properly. However, small leaks or gradual blockages may only become apparent after the air conditioner has run for several hours and produced enough condensation. In the one or two days after cleaning, it is helpful to monitor the sides of the indoor unit and the wall for any signs of moisture or dripping, as this is an effective way to detect problems early. Identifying the cause promptly and making minor adjustments will usually quickly restore normal drainage.
