Fixed-speed vs inverter AC: operation, electricity costs and how to choose
Contents
Fixed-speed and inverter refer to compressor control methods, not the classification of window units and split units. When choosing, also check cooling capacity, energy label, daily usage time and installation conditions, rather than looking only at the word "inverter".
How does a fixed-speed AC regulate room temperature
A fixed-speed compressor generally operates at a constant speed and regulates room temperature by starting and stopping cooling. After the set condition is reached, the compressor may pause, but whether the indoor fan continues to run depends on the model and mode.
The controller's start-stop temperature differential is not a universal plus or minus 1.5 degrees for all models; nor can the instantaneous starting current be used directly to estimate electricity use for the whole night.
What is different about inverter type?
Inverter control can adjust compressor speed within the equipment’s allowable range and vary cooling output according to indoor load. When the set temperature is nearly reached, suitable low-load operation can help reduce frequent start-stop cycles and room temperature fluctuations.
An inverter model may also stop cooling due to load, protection, or mode settings; it does not mean it will run nonstop all day. The minimum output and operating range depend on the actual model.
How should energy-saving results be compared?
Compare the energy labels and rated power consumption of models with similar cooling capacity, and consider running hours, sunlight, windows, insulation and set temperature. An oversized or undersized unit, poor installation and dirt buildup will all affect actual performance.
We cannot promise that every inverter unit will save 40% or a fixed 15 to 20% on electricity bills. The energy label is a tool for comparing products under specified test conditions, not a guarantee of your home's monthly bill.
Separate the unit price, repair work and durability
Also compare the purchase price, removal of the old unit, installation, piping, power supply and future maintenance costs. The supply and cost of circuit boards, compressors and other parts must be checked by brand and model; do not judge durability or repair cost solely by fixed-speed or inverter type.
If the equipment is still under the original factory warranty, first check the warranty terms; do not open the electrical section yourself just to inspect the control board.
Enquire about SelectionSelection and pre-installation preparation
Please provide the room dimensions, use, sun exposure, number of regular occupants, existing model and a photo of the outdoor unit location. First confirm the cooling requirement, a safe work area and the scope of work, then compare suitable models; do not lean out of the window to take photos.
Routine maintenance should still follow the manual to clean removable dust filters and keep the air inlet and outlet clear. Deep cleaning and repairs are different jobs; they cannot be replaced by switching to an inverter model.
