How to read an air conditioner energy label? What do the rating and electricity use mean?
Contents
The energy label can help compare models, but it is not a receipt guaranteeing your personal electricity bill. First confirm that the product matches the label, then look at the grade, cooling capacity and other information; this helps avoid making a decision based on only one big number.
First check the full model and applicable label
Hong Kong’s Mandatory Energy Efficiency Labelling Scheme provides energy information for designated products. When purchasing, check the unit, quotation and label model number. Similar series names do not mean all models share the same grade or specifications.
Refer to the current information from the Electrical and Mechanical Services Department; it is more reliable than looking only at old advertisements. Figures from different test standards, product categories and labelling methods cannot be mixed at will, and foreign labels should not be used to directly infer the Hong Kong rating.
The capacity grade should be compared together with the cooling capacity
For home air conditioner energy labels, higher efficiency grades can help identify more efficient products, but units with larger capacity may still have different power demand from smaller units even in the same grade. First compare suitable cooling capacities that are close to each other.
Cooling capacity indicates cooling performance, while rated input power and energy use are another measure. Do not choose only the lowest wattage and ignore whether it can meet the room’s needs, and do not assume the highest horsepower is the most energy-efficient.
Annual power consumption is only a reference, not the same as your electricity bill
The annual electricity data on the label is calculated under specified test and assumed conditions. It may differ from your home's daily usage hours, settings, sunlight and room temperature. It can be used as a reference for similar models, but it cannot guarantee your yearly consumption will be exactly that figure.
Actual electricity charges also depend on usage and billing conditions; do not multiply the label number by an arbitrary tariff and treat it as a guaranteed cost. If you want to compare your own usage, keep a reasonable record under the same conditions and avoid attributing all changes in household electricity bills to the AC alone.
Both the purchase and day-to-day use affect the result
The right system still needs proper installation, ventilation and heat dissipation, unobstructed airflow and maintenance support. A new unit with a better label does not mean the filter does not need cleaning, or that it can cool efficiently with windows and doors left open all the time; unusually high power use also cannot simply be treated as dust buildup.
When quoting, check the main unit, removal of the old unit, installation and extra works, and review the supply and warranty terms. Energy labels provide energy information, but do not guarantee the same workmanship, safety, repair prices or after-sales arrangements.

Common questions
If two air conditioners are the same class, will they definitely use the same amount of electricity?
Not necessarily. Cooling capacity, specifications and usage conditions may differ, so compare based on similar loads and complete information, not just the rating.
Can annual power consumption be taken directly as my yearly electricity use?
No. That is reference data under standard conditions. Actual hours of use, environment and settings are different, and electricity bills are also affected by billing conditions.
Reference sources and applicable scope
This article provides a preliminary guide only and does not replace an on-site diagnosis. Original manufacturer functions and operation apply only to the corresponding model; please refer to your own unit's manual. For fixed electrical installations, inspection should be arranged by a registered electrical contractor.
