Preparing your air conditioning before and after a Signal No. 8: on-site records and when to stop using it

Contents

A Signal No. 8 is not the only factor in deciding whether air conditioning can be used. Check whether the equipment has taken in water, is making unusual noise, may be loose, or has abnormal power supply. Before a storm, you may save the model number, service contact, and existing faults in advance, but do not risk leaning out or climbing up to inspect the outdoor unit.

Information you can prepare when the weather is fine

Keep the air-conditioner model number, original works and repair records, and take photos of the visible installation from a safe indoor location. If there are already concerns about the brackets, drainage, noise or water leakage, contact the appropriate person early for assessment; visual inspection by yourself is not a load-bearing safety or electrical test.

What work should not be done during a typhoon signal?

Do not lean out of windows, remove covers, secure outdoor parts, block ventilation areas, or arrange high-level cleaning. Do not ignore water ingress, tripping breakers, or a burning smell just to lower the room temperature; if shutdown is needed, operate according to on-site safety conditions, and do not touch wet electrical areas.

Power and room comfort should be considered separately

Turning off the AC does not guarantee a power outage will not happen, and it cannot serve as backup power for other appliances at home. Whether the AC can be used again must be judged by the actual condition and the manufacturer's requirements; do not replace a safety check with the feeling that the room is stuffy, and do not risk opening windows in strong wind.

How to contact the service provider after a storm

Explain whether the fault appeared before, during, or after the storm, and provide photos, the model, and whether there was water ingress or tripping. Arrival time and whether exterior wall or high-level work can be carried out will be confirmed according to safety, traffic, and actual availability at the time; work is not guaranteed to start as soon as the warning is lifted.

Cleaning cannot replace repairs for wind or rain damage

First determine whether it is dirt buildup, an existing fault, water ingress or an installation/component issue, then confirm the cleaning or repair scope. Keep the inspection and quotation records, and do not assume the equipment is safe to restart just because it looks clean.
