AC TIPS & ADVICE

Should you clean the air conditioner when a child is coughing? Medical needs and equipment condition should be handled separately

Contents

A child’s cough cannot be judged as being caused by mould in the air conditioner, or as meaning the unit only needs cleaning, simply because it happens at the same time as the AC is switched on. If the discomfort is persistent or severe, seek medical advice first. Equipment odours, dirt and water leakage can be checked separately; the two do not replace each other.

Record when the discomfort started, the surrounding environment, and any equipment abnormality for the relevant professionals’ reference. Do not diagnose the type of germ, allergen, or cleaning need based on symptoms alone.

Cleaning is for the equipment and dirt; it does not promise to cure respiratory problems, and we do not promote services by frightening parents.

Visible dirt is only a clue for inspection

There may be condensation and dust inside the unit, but that does not mean every air conditioner has heavy black mould or dust mites. The eye cannot confirm the type or amount of microorganisms.

Watch for odours, built-up dirt and drainage, and maintain according to the manufacturer’s requirements. A clean unit does not mean all indoor environmental or health factors have been ruled out.

Provide different information to medical staff and service staff

For medical matters, describe the actual symptoms and duration. For equipment, describe the model, airflow, odour or dripping. Do not diagnose a child from equipment photos alone.

  • Unsuitable record: when it started, whether it is continuous, and the relevant details to tell medical staff.
  • Environmental record: seat or bed position, airflow direction, ventilation, and other nearby odour sources.
  • Equipment record: visible dirt in a safe location, time periods of odour, and leak locations; do not lean in or dismantle the unit to take photos.

A common misconception among parents: is simply washing the dust filter enough to make it clean?

Cleaning the filter is not the same as disinfecting the whole unit, and it is not a treatment for coughing. Maintain the filter according to the manufacturer's permitted method, and first confirm whether it is washable.

Black spots or stains cannot confirm the microorganism species, and hands or tools should not be inserted into the air outlet; internal conditions should be checked by personnel.

Find professional help

Do not spray chemicals, fragrance sprays, or antibacterial products into the unit yourself. Without corresponding exposure and test data, you also cannot say that one kind of spray is definitely more harmful to the airways than mould.

Before service, confirm the model, cleaning areas, material compatibility, electrical protection and test-run arrangement; no guarantee of sterility, child safety, or curing symptoms.
