How to use your air conditioner long-term and effectively

Contents

In the hot summer months, air conditioners are undoubtedly our saviours, providing a comfortable environment and keeping us cool at home or at work. However, to keep an air conditioner running efficiently for a long time, certain measures and regular maintenance are needed.

Regular AC maintenance

AC maintenance helps maintain performance. Here are some key inspection and maintenance steps:

Check serviceable filters based on usage and dust buildup; first confirm whether they are washable and the suitable cleaning method, and do not soak all filter materials in cleaner.

If there is internal dirt build-up or an abnormality, first confirm the location and cause, then arrange suitable cleaning or repair. Do not use general spray washing as a substitute for inspection.

The blower wheel, bearings and internal parts are not for residents to dismantle, inspect or oil themselves; if there is rubbing noise, vibration or a change in airflow, record the situation and let a technician inspect it.

Effective use of an air conditioner

Using the air conditioner properly can improve its performance and extend its lifespan. Here are some important usage tips:

Set an appropriate temperature: choosing a suitable temperature can improve comfort. When using the unit, you may refer to commonly recommended energy-saving temperatures to avoid excessive energy use.

When cooling is not needed, switch it off as required. There is no need to keep it in energy-saving mode all the time for maintenance. Mode functions and restart procedures follow the original manufacturer’s instructions.

Proper insulation: Ensuring your room or office is properly insulated can help the air conditioner run more efficiently. This means making sure windows and doors are well sealed and using curtains or blinds to block heat. In addition, insulation materials such as insulated glass or heat-reflective coatings can further improve efficiency.

Choose the Right Air Conditioner

It is also important to choose an air conditioner model that suits your needs. When choosing an air conditioner, you should consider the following factors:

Excessive capacity may lead to poor operation and dehumidification coordination, especially when control method and actual load are considered. Not all inverter units perform the same. When choosing a unit, check the cooling capacity marked in BTU/h or kW against the site requirements.

Energy-efficiency indicators must be read with their definitions and units; BTU, BTU/h and watts should not be treated as the same measure. For Hong Kong, compare CSPF and electricity consumption data under the same model type, capacity and label conditions; do not rank all models by a single EER value with no conditions.

Extra features: modern AC units may have many added functions, such as remote control, timers, energy-saving mode, sleep mode and air filters, which can improve your comfort and the unit's efficiency.

The key to long-term use is suitable capacity, unobstructed supply and return airflow, maintenance according to the manual, and prompt handling of abnormalities. Cleaning frequency does not guarantee service life or a fixed reduction in electricity costs.
