AC Ducts: Uses, Types and Access Space
Contents
An air duct is the part of a ducted system that delivers air, and is different from the decorative plastic duct covering the refrigerant pipes. Not all home air conditioners have ducted supply systems, so cleaning and inspection arrangements should first confirm the equipment type.
AC Duct | Function and Importance
An AC duct, also known as an air duct or ventilation duct, mainly carries cool or warm air produced by the air conditioner throughout a building. In other words, an AC duct is like the circulatory system of an AC system, responsible for delivering cool or warm air where it is needed.
A properly designed and well-maintained AC duct can bring the following benefits:
Improve energy efficiency
The design and maintenance of AC ducts are crucial to improving energy efficiency. Well-designed AC ducts can effectively deliver cool or warm air, reduce energy waste, and thus improve energy efficiency while saving energy and electricity bills.
Improve comfort
If the blown air returns to the return air inlet too quickly and does not reach the use area sufficiently, this is called short-circuiting of airflow; it is an airflow distribution issue, not an electrical short circuit. It must be judged according to the vent layout and on-site measurement, and cannot be solved by cleaning alone.
Extend the life of the air conditioning system
Maintenance must suit the materials, design and site conditions. The aim is to deal with visible issues and confirm operation, not to promise that cleaning alone will extend a specific service life or eliminate all airflow problems.
AC Duct | Types
The type and material of AC ducts can vary according to their use and installation environment. Below are some common types of AC ducts:
Metal ducting
For metal ducting, also pay attention to joints, insulation and condensation; material conductivity is only one design factor, and using metal alone does not mean it will definitely consume more energy or leak water.
Flexible duct
Flexible duct is made of plastic and steel wire, and is easy to install, especially in complex or narrow spaces.
Fiberboard air duct
Inspection and cleaning of fibre or lining materials must follow product requirements and condition. Not all materials can be brushed, wet-cleaned, or sprayed with chemicals, and a more frequent cycle cannot be specified without a proper basis.
AC Duct | Maintenance
Record odour, changes in airflow, visible condensation, or damaged insulation, and have the cause confirmed by the appropriate person; duct, fan, filter, and control issues must be handled separately.
If damage is found, arrange an inspection. Do not climb into the false ceiling, remove air ducts, or touch the fan or electrical parts yourself.
Whether cleaning, repair or material replacement is needed should be decided according to the inspection result, and a fixed cleaning cycle should not be treated as a rule applicable to all systems.
Keep access to service areas clear, and do not block vents with clutter or damage insulation by pressure; before making renovation changes, have the system staff confirm airflow and access requirements.
Residents may provide symptoms and photos taken from a safe position; the inside of ducting, false ceilings and equipment removal/reinstallation should be handled by suitable service staff. Do not treat ordinary exterior dusting as completing system maintenance.
