Do air conditioner cleaners work?

Contents

Air conditioner cleaners were first invented by the Japanese, but Japan's climate is different from Hong Kong's. Japan has a dry climate and mould is less likely to develop; air conditioners there usually only accumulate dust. As a result, some Japanese cleaning methods simply use a specially designed vacuum cleaner rather than disassembly and washing. Therefore, spraying cleaner to wash away dust so it flows into the drain pan and out may solve part of the problem. But in humid Hong Kong, this cleaning method is not suitable.

The water tray and fan are indeed the places where dust and dirt accumulate most easily. In addition, dust and mould can also build up on the blades and casing of the unit, and these also need to be thoroughly cleaned with special tools. If only a spray cleaner is used, these deposits cannot be fully removed. Therefore, this industry still requires professional cleaners to carry out deep cleaning to ensure the unit’s operating performance.

The water tray and fan are indeed the places where dust and dirt accumulate most easily, and they must be dismantled and cleaned thoroughly. In addition, the blades and casing of the unit may also have stubborn dirt and mould, which also need to be thoroughly cleaned with a pressure washer, non-toxic detergent and special tools. If only a spray cleaner is used, these deposits cannot be fully removed. Therefore, this industry still requires professional cleaners to carry out deep cleaning to ensure the unit’s operating performance and air quality.

Why does Hong Kong need air-conditioner cleaning?

Because Hong Kong has a humid climate, ACs are easily affected by mould, scale and other contamination. Over time, this dirt can cause poor cooling, water leakage and higher electricity consumption.

As a result, when this kind of product is used in Hong Kong, its performance is inevitably greatly reduced. ACs in Hong Kong also run for long hours, so they must be cleaned by dismantling and washing.

Are the ingredients in air conditioner cleaners effective?

The ingredients are mainly surfactants, stabilizers, deodorizers, antibacterial agents, anti-mould agents, and various fragrances.

These AC cleaning agents are basically the same as most cleaning products; only the packaging is designed to look like a spray can, and the product is marketed as being specifically for cleaning air conditioners. Through commercial packaging and market segmentation, they are in essence almost no different from ordinary cleaning products.

The function of an air conditioner cleaner is limited to cleaning some parts of the unit. It can be used for routine minor maintenance and may help with some dust-related issues. However, it is unlikely to solve dirt buildup in other areas. In fact, this type of cleaner is more of an auxiliary tool and cannot completely resolve internal contamination.
