AC TIPS & ADVICE

Old air conditioner: repair or replace? First confirm the unit condition and total cost

Contents

To decide whether to repair or replace an old AC, first look at the inspection results, parts availability, existing installation and total cost. You cannot judge it as beyond repair just by age, higher bills or the arrival of autumn. A new unit should also be compared using actual energy data; do not assume it is always safer or more energy-efficient.

Separate faults from dirt buildup

Record dripping, poor cooling, unusual noise, tripping and past repairs; state how long the problem has been present and under what settings it occurs. Cleaning removes dirt buildup, but it cannot fix all materials, parts or installation issues. If there is an electrical abnormality, do not keep switching the unit on and off for testing.

Obtain comparable repair options

Please ask the service provider to explain the inspection findings, recommended work, whether parts are available, and the quotation range. Confirm what is only an estimate and what requires dismantling to determine; do not treat one cleaning or refrigerant top-up as a universal solution for all older-unit problems.

Replacement cost is more than just the unit price

Check the new unit size, support, copper piping, drainage, power supply and installation location, and specify removal of the old unit, installation and any extra work. Whether existing pipes and brackets can be reused must be assessed according to specifications and condition; maintenance of the new unit and any issues from the existing installation must also be confirmed separately.

Compare energy use using similar data

Compare the Hong Kong energy labels and rated data of models with similar cooling capacity, and pay attention to the actual room and usage pattern. If electricity bills rise, first separate weather, tariff, usage hours and other appliances; do not use the bill alone to calculate a guaranteed payback period for replacement.

Do not use off-season promotion as a substitute for confirmation.

Prices, supply and booking dates for any month are subject to final confirmation. Do not claim that autumn is always cheaper, that technicians are less busy, or that workmanship is necessarily more careful; assessment can be arranged in advance, but whether the work will proceed still depends on the site, supply and mutual confirmation.
