How to view the service life of an AC: changes in condition and maintenance records

Contents

The service life of an AC cannot be judged by a general 10 to 15 year range, and the age of the unit does not reflect its current condition. Rather than seeking tips to extend its life, first keep records of the model, usage and maintenance. If there is an abnormality, confirm what work is needed based on an actual inspection.

Keep equipment and work records

Keep the full model number, purchase and installation details, receipts and maintenance terms. Record each cleaning, repair or additional work item clearly with the date, scope, parts and unresolved issues; do not treat a replaced part as proof that the entire unit has returned to new condition.

Do not judge the unit condition by age alone

Record the usage hours, settings, room purpose and conditions when the problem appears; not cooling, unusual noise, dripping or breaker trips should be checked separately. Changes in electricity bills are also affected by weather, operating hours and other appliances, so you cannot judge from age alone or from one electricity bill that the unit is about to be scrapped.

Separate routine work from internal work

The filter and exterior should be maintained according to the manufacturer’s allowed methods; do not apply a fixed cleaning frequency, rest time or cleaning agent. Internal, outdoor high-level, electrical and refrigerant systems should be checked by suitable personnel. Do not dismantle, wash or modify connections yourself in the name of extending service life.

Compare repair and replacement using full cost

First obtain the confirmed fault, parts availability, work scope and warranty terms, then compare the full cost of repair versus replacement. When choosing a new unit, check the capacity, Hong Kong energy label, installation and connection requirements; do not assume brand name, energy-saving mode or new features guarantee how long it will last.

Maintenance cannot promise a fixed number of years

Cleaning, repair, and preventive maintenance each have different scopes. You cannot claim that doing them all will definitely prevent future breakdowns or extend service life by a certain number of years. The next schedule should be based on the manual, usage, actual dirt buildup, and the unit’s condition. If the fault continues, follow up on the cause first; do not use more cleaning as a substitute for diagnosis.
