Pre-installation checks before replacing an AC in winter: size, drainage, power supply and quotation

Contents

The practical preparation for replacing an AC in winter is to confirm the unit size, support, power supply, drainage, outdoor unit location and property management requirements before purchase. Off-season does not guarantee lower prices or immediate availability; first confirm whether installation is possible, then compare models of the same capacity and the full project quotation.

Confirm the site details before placing the order

Unit model and air-conditioning location

Take a photo of the current unit model and AC position, and measure the visible opening and surrounding space; do not dismantle the unit, modify the bracket or lean out to measure the exterior wall yourself. The installer must verify the new unit size, the original manufacturer-required clearances and the support.

Outdoor unit and maintenance access

You must confirm whether the outdoor unit location can be safely reached, and whether the management office has working-hour or exterior-wall work requirements. If extra access, scaffolding, or other arrangements are needed, confirm the scope, quotation, and responsibilities first; do not assume basic installation includes everything.

Power supply and drainage

Suitable staff will check the required power supply and drainage route. An old unit position does not mean a new unit will definitely fit, and you should not change the plug, wiring or drainage slope on your own. Works involving a new power supply must be confirmed separately and are not included as basic installation.

Which items should be separated in the quote?

Please ask the service provider to itemise the purchase of the unit, basic installation and any extra work, as well as the applicable arrangements for old unit disposal, materials and work limitations.

Basic installation and extra work

First confirm what the basic installation covers, and whether the site involves a new power supply, piping, brackets, exterior wall work, or special access. Do not assume unspecified items are included; extra work must be quoted and approved first.

Capacity and energy label

Compare specific models with similar cooling capacity and the Hong Kong energy label, rather than choosing only by brand or a single EER figure; actual electricity costs still depend on the room and usage conditions.

Capacity is not judged by floor area alone

Room area, west-facing exposure, ceiling height, windows, and heat sources must all be considered; do not simply multiply by a fixed wattage per square meter. Check the cooling capacity against the actual situation, then have the installer assess the model and location.

After-sales documents

Keep the model, quotation, payment and work records, and distinguish between the scope of the product manufacturer’s warranty and the installation warranty, including contact methods; do not treat them as the same commitment.

Completion check

Confirm the completed items, test run, drainage and operating instructions with the installer, and record any existing problems and follow-up work needed. Do not dismantle parts yourself for inspection and acceptance.

Winter is only an optional period for scheduling, and prices and lead times are confirmed by the quotation and schedule at that time. Checking the installation conditions first helps reduce unexpected extra work more than assuming the off-season is definitely cheaper.

Find professional help

Please provide the existing unit types, district, AC location and photos of the outdoor unit that can be taken safely, so customer service can first confirm the required assessment and quotation. Do not dismantle the unit yourself or lean out from a height.
