Public housing window AC selection: approved locations, dimensions and maintenance arrangements
Contents
When choosing a window AC for public housing, first check with the management office the available location, application and work requirements for that unit, then compare suitable size and cooling capacity. Do not assume that a product marked "suitable for public housing" means every estate, unit and existing support will be suitable
Prepare on-site details before quoting
From an indoor safe position, photograph the existing AC opening, window frame, support and surrounding environment, and provide the unit dimensions and model. Have the fixing, drainage, heat dissipation and work access assessed by the appropriate personnel; residents should not push out the unit, remove the window, or climb onto the exterior wall to take measurements.
Cooling capacity is not just about area
Please state the room size, sunlight exposure, glass area, ceiling height, usage, and regular number of occupants, then choose the rated cooling capacity according to actual needs. A general square-metre-to-tonnage chart is not the design result for an individual unit, and market tonnage names cannot be treated as identical cooling capacity across all models.
How to read energy labels
When comparing Hong Kong energy labels, also look at cooling capacity, energy efficiency grade and the stated power consumption data. Grade 1 means higher energy efficiency; you cannot say a higher number always means lower power use, and do not directly compare annual energy consumption across different cooling capacities to judge which is more suitable.
Leave suitable conditions for cleaning and maintenance
Ask whether the filter can be safely removed in the original factory way, how future cleaning after relocation will be carried out, and what arrangements the management office has for work hours and common areas. Being a window unit does not guarantee it can definitely be removed, that no extra equipment is needed, or that no additional charges apply.
Keep the confirmation and work records
Keep the management office reply, quotation, actual installation scope and receipt. Existing leaks, unusual noise, bracket concerns or power supply issues must be stated in advance. Installation, cleaning, repairs and manufacturer warranty should each be confirmed under the relevant terms, and one service should not be treated as covering every follow-up issue.
