Black Debris Blowing Out of the Air Conditioner: Identify the Phenomenon, Stop Using It and Arrange an Inspection

Contents

If black debris is blowing out of the air conditioner, stop using it first and record where it fell, when it appeared and the condition of the unit. The black substance may need inspection, but photos, color or smell alone cannot confirm what microorganism it is, whether it contains toxins, or that there is no damage to the components.

What information should be recorded before booking?

Without climbing or touching the inside of the unit, take photos of the air outlet, any fallen debris and the model number, and note whether the issue happened just after start-up, after changing fan speed, or throughout the whole operation period. Also record whether there is dripping water, unusual noise, a burning smell or changes in cooling; do not dismantle the unit or reach into the fan wheel for sampling.

A clean dust filter does not mean the inside of the unit has been inspected

A removable dust filter is not the same as the evaporator, blower wheel or drain pan. Residents should only handle filters and exterior parts that their own model manual allows to be removed and washed; do not insert a vacuum cleaner, brush, disinfectant spray or water jet into the air outlet, and do not assume spraying foam can handle every source.

How should I confirm whether it is cleaning or repair?

Confirm with the service staff which parts need inspection, the actual washable and detachable scope, surrounding waterproof protection, and the final testing arrangement. If damaged materials, loose parts or other faults are found, cleaning and repair will be quoted separately; the fact that cooling still works does not mean one cleaning can restore all functions.

Deal with any physical discomfort separately

Visible dirt does not mean indoor air or microbial testing has been completed. If you feel unwell, seek medical advice; equipment cleaning is not a diagnosis, treatment or guarantee of sterility. If testing is needed, first confirm the sampling location, items and the scope of applicability of the results; general indoor air indicators cannot be directly applied to debris photos.

How should follow-up be handled after completion?

Keep the cleaning scope, parts inspected and test-run records, and observe whether any fallen debris or other abnormality occurs again under the same usage pattern. If it keeps happening, contact the service provider for follow-up. Do not repeatedly spray chemicals or dismantle the fan wheel yourself, and do not assume a cleaner-looking exterior means all causes have been ruled out.
