How to compare AC noise specifications? Decibels, fan speed, and outdoor placement

Contents

When choosing an AC for a bedroom, the lowest decibel figure may look attractive, but first ask, "Which part was measured, and with what settings?" Noise specifications are for comparison; they are not a guarantee that the same sound level will be heard anywhere in the room after installation.

Sound pressure and sound power should not be compared directly

Daikin explains that sound power describes the acoustic energy emitted by the source, while sound pressure is measured under a specified environment, equipment position and measurement distance, and is also the data related to what people hear. Even if both are expressed in decibels, they are not the same indicator. When you see dB(A), also check the indicator name and notes in the specification table; do not compare values from different measurement methods directly.

Which fan speed usually gives the lowest noise?

Specifications may list numbers for high, medium, low or quiet fan speeds, and the lowest value on the product page may not represent the airflow during normal cooling. When comparing two units, use the same mode and similar fan speed conditions, and ask clearly whether the low fan speed is sufficient for the room. Do not compare one unit's high fan speed figure with another unit's quiet-mode minimum value as if it were a fair comparison.

Both indoor and outdoor must be considered

Putting the compressor outdoors does not mean a split unit is completely silent indoors; the indoor fan, airflow, and vibration transfer still affect the experience. For window units, the unit body and window-frame installation must also be considered. If the outdoor unit is close to a bedroom window, neighbours, or reflective surfaces, this also needs to be assessed; you cannot look only at the indoor unit specifications.

Actual noise will be affected by the wall, support, installation quality, distance and background noise. Do not place miscellaneous items under the outdoor bracket, tighten fixing parts yourself, or climb up to change the position. Construction work and whether the installation meets relevant noise requirements should be assessed by suitable personnel.

It used to be quiet, but has suddenly become noisy. How can you tell the difference?

The rated noise level of a purchase cannot diagnose a new sound. Note whether the sound appears at startup, during continuous operation or when shutting down, and safely record the sound together with any dripping water, weak airflow or warning lights. Some operating sounds must be judged according to the model manual. If there is abnormal rubbing, strong vibration or a burning smell, stop using the unit first and do not put your hand into the air outlet to look for foreign objects.

Air Conditioner Buying Checklist

  • Same metric: sound pressure or sound power, and the manufacturer's stated measurement conditions
  • Same section: separate comparison of indoor and outdoor units
  • Same settings: mode, fan speed, and the special setting used for the minimum value
  • On-site arrangement: bed and work position, windows, neighbours and accessible service positions

Common questions

If both units show dB(A), can they be compared directly?

Not necessarily. You need to confirm whether it is sound pressure or sound power, indoor or outdoor, the mode, fan speed, measuring distance and conditions. The same unit does not mean the same measurement basis.

Can quiet mode guarantee that the AC makes no sound at all?

No. Silent mode usually changes the operating settings, but there is still fan noise and other sound sources. The actual experience depends on the location, background noise, and installation, and also on whether the required airflow and cooling can be met.

Reference sources and applicable scope

This article provides a preliminary guide only and does not replace an on-site diagnosis. Original manufacturer functions and operation apply only to the corresponding model; please refer to your own unit's manual. For fixed electrical installations, inspection should be arranged by a registered electrical contractor.
