R32 vs R410A refrigerant: key points on energy saving, safety, and when to replace the unit

Contents

R32 and R410A are different refrigerants. R32 has a lower global warming potential, but that does not mean every R32 air conditioner is necessarily more energy efficient, nor does it mean an existing R410A air conditioner can be directly converted to R32. When choosing a unit, consider the energy label of the whole system, cooling capacity, installation conditions and the manufacturer's specifications.

What is the main difference between R32 and R410A?

Global Warming Potential (GWP)675Factory information approx. 2,090
Safety categoriesA2L, lower flammability categoryA1, no flame propagation under standard test classification

Can I replace or mix them myself?NoNo

The above GWP figures follow Daikin's citation of the IPCC Fourth Assessment Report (AR4). Different sources may vary because they use other assessment versions or rounded values; the source should be stated when making comparisons and should not be mixed. GWP is not a comparison of the electricity use of the whole air conditioner or a guarantee of carbon emissions.

R32 has lower flammability, but that does not mean it is completely non-flammable

Older equipment may also be labelled R22. R22 is HCFC, while R410A and R32 are HFC. Environmental impact and safety characteristics cannot be summed up simply by the term “eco refrigerant.” Identify it by the nameplate and original manufacturer information, not by pipe colour or the age of the unit; and do not treat control dates from other regions as Hong Kong’s current sales ban date.

R32 is an A2L refrigerant, so installation, inspection and repair should be handled by personnel familiar with the relevant refrigerant and equipment. Do not open piping, top up, mix or release refrigerant yourself; the A1 classification does not mean there are no high-pressure, leakage or work risks.

Room, installation and maintenance requirements must be judged according to the manufacturer's instructions for the specific model. You cannot decide the usage limits of all models based only on the refrigerant type.

Is R32 AC always more energy efficient?

Do not make a guarantee based only on the refrigerant name. Actual power consumption is also affected by the unit design, whether the cooling capacity is suitable, the settings, hours of use, cleanliness and installation condition. When buying, compare the energy labels and manufacturer's specifications of the relevant models.

Do not treat a single test, a specific model, or an overseas calculation as proof that every unit will save the same percentage. Nor should you generally claim third-party testing proves lower electricity use without a specific test number and model.

Does the existing R410A unit need to be replaced immediately?

Do not assume an old unit must be replaced just because you saw an article comparing R32. Whether to repair or replace depends on the actual fault, equipment condition, parts and the manufacturer's requirements. Do not convert an R410A unit to R32 on your own, and do not treat "refrigerant replacement" as a general upgrade service.
