What to check first when an air conditioner freezes: information and questions for booking an inspection
Contents
If ice forms during cooling, stop using the unit first; the most useful thing before making an inspection booking is the full set of symptoms, not deciding in advance that it needs cleaning or more refrigerant. Photos, model, mode and time of occurrence can help communication, but they cannot replace an on-site inspection.
What to record for safety
Only take photos from a safe position of any visible icing, and note how long the unit has been running before it appears, whether the settings and airflow have changed, and the status of dripping water, unusual noise, or indicator lights. Do not remove the panel to look for ice, touch frozen parts, or reach toward the outdoor unit.
Please state what work was done before.
Provide the most recent cleaning, installation, renovation or repair records, and state clearly whether the fault appeared before or after the work. This is information for determining the cause; it does not mean that a short time gap alone can prove workmanship errors, damage to a specific part, or that any one party must repair it free of charge.
What should I confirm with the service staff?
Ask what has been found so far and what has not yet been confirmed, what inspections, cleaning or repairs are needed, and whether extra charges will be quoted in advance. It may be necessary to distinguish airflow, controls, components and the refrigerant system, and not draw conclusions solely from the age of the unit, a temperature setting that is too low, or dust buildup.
Keep the basis for the decision after inspection
Keep the inspection findings, recommended work, actual completed scope and follow-up contact details. Use original-manufacturer maintenance for daily filters; do not treat a fixed temperature, annual refrigerant check or timed rest as an anti-icing method for all models.
