Common faults in window-type air conditioners: symptom logging, stopping use and repair scope
Contents
If a window-type air conditioner is not cooling, will not start, makes unusual noise, leaks water or gives off an odd smell, you can record the symptoms first, but you should not dismantle or repair it yourself based on a checklist. If there is a burning smell, smoke, tripping, looseness or water near electrical parts, stop using it first; power supply, internal parts and the window support should be checked by suitable personnel.
AC not cooling
Cause:
Dust filter blockage: the dust filter is the part of the air conditioner that filters dust and particles from the air. If the dust filter is blocked, airflow is obstructed and cooling performance will be affected.
Refrigerant is the important substance used for cooling in an AC unit. If refrigerant is insufficient, cooling performance will decline.
Compressor fault: The compressor is the core component of the air conditioner. If it fails, cooling performance will be seriously affected. Do not try to dismantle or repair it yourself.
Repair method:
Clean or Replace the Dust Filter: Clean the dust filter regularly to maintain smooth airflow. If the dust filter is damaged, replace it promptly.
If a problem with the refrigerant system is suspected, have a suitable technician inspect it. If a leak is confirmed, first assess the leak point and repair, then handle the refrigerant according to the equipment specifications; do not rely on repeated top-ups instead of repair.
Inspect the compressor: if the compressor is faulty, a professional repair technician should inspect and assess it.
Air conditioner will not turn on
Cause:
Power problem: there may be an issue with the socket, power cord or fuse.
Remote control fault: the remote control batteries are depleted, or the remote itself has malfunctioned.
Relay failure: the relay is an internal electronic control component of the air conditioner. If it fails, the unit may not start and professional repair is required.
Repair method:
Check from a safe position whether visible wires and plugs are damaged; sockets, wiring, fuses and protection devices should be checked by a qualified electrician. Do not replace wires or modify the installation yourself, and do not restart repeatedly if the breaker trips again and again.
Replace the remote control battery or repair the remote control: check the battery in the remote control and replace it with a new one if it is depleted. If the remote control is faulty, please have it repaired or replaced by a professional.
Check the running relay: a professional should inspect the power system and relay. If damaged, a technician must replace it.
Excessive operating noise from the air conditioner
Cause:
Loose or deformed fan blades: loose or deformed fan blades may cause abnormal noise during operation.
Compressor wear: If the compressor has been used for too long or is worn, noise during operation will increase.
Loose screws: loose internal screws in the air conditioner may cause vibration and noise during operation.
Repair method:
Have the blower wheel, fixings and other parts checked by the appropriate person. Residents should not dismantle the fan, reach into the air outlet, or loosen the support of a window-type unit to find the source of the noise.
Inspect the compressor: if a compressor problem is suspected, please have a professional carry out a detailed inspection.
Inspection and repair of internal parts or support screws will be assessed by the service staff; residents should only record visible looseness and abnormal noises, and should not dismantle the unit or tighten each screw themselves.
Air conditioner dripping
Cause:
Blocked drain pipe: when the drain pipe is blocked, moisture produced by the air conditioner cannot be discharged, leading to dripping.
Drain pan damage: The drain pan collects moisture from the AC unit. If it is damaged, moisture will leak बाहर.
When the indoor evaporator freezes and then melts, dripping may occur. But the cause of icing is not only the temperature setting; it may also involve airflow or other faults. Do not scrape the ice, apply heat, or dismantle the unit to check it yourself.
Repair method:
Drainage problems should first be assessed by service personnel, including the drip tray, connections and piping. Do not remove pipes, flush with water, or pour in white vinegar or chemical drain cleaner. Please confirm whether cleaning includes the relevant pipe sections and any extra work.
If the drain pan is suspected to be damaged, have the appropriate personnel inspect whether it can be repaired or replaced; residents should not remove it themselves, and damage cannot be determined from leakage alone.
If there is icing or meltwater, stop using the unit first and arrange an inspection of the airflow and related parts. Internal cleaning does not mean all cooling faults can be fixed, and adjusting the room temperature or brushing the condenser is not a universal solution.
A bad smell after the air conditioner is turned on
Cause:
Dust buildup on the dust filter: dirt and dust accumulated on the dust filter may cause odour in the air.
Mold or bacteria growth: A humid environment can cause mold and bacteria to grow inside the air conditioner, creating unpleasant odours.
Internal parts damage: damaged internal parts of the AC may release an unpleasant odor.
Repair method:
Clean or Replace the Dust Filter: Clean or replace the dust filter regularly to prevent dirt buildup.
Internal odours must be assessed based on the dirt location and other causes. Do not spray cleaning agents or disinfectants inside the unit yourself. If there is a burning smell, stop using it at once and do not continue operating while waiting for the odour to clear.
Inspection, replacement, and restoration of internal parts should be handled by suitable personnel; please confirm the inspection scope and quotation first, and do not assume that cleaning includes all fault repairs.
The five symptom types are only for enquiry guidance, not for self-diagnosis or repair instructions. Keep the model number, when the problem appeared, and any existing repair records; stop using equipment that shows safety warning signs first, then arrange an inspection.
