Black dust coming from an air conditioner: stop using it first and do not assume it is mold
Contents
Black debris from the air outlet may be related to dirt buildup on the blower wheel, the condition of the dust filter, or ageing materials. Black does not mean a particular type of mould has been confirmed, and the source of contamination cannot be determined from photos alone.
First reduce the debris from being blown around
Stop using the equipment and keep people away from the area where debris keeps falling. If there is also a burning smell, smoke, sparks, abnormal friction or water on electrical parts, do not power it on again; arrange an inspection.
Do not put your face close to the air outlet to inspect it, and do not reach or use tools to probe into the fan wheel. When taking samples or cleaning the floor, avoid raising dust; there is no need to restart the unit just to identify debris.
What can be recorded from the exterior?
Take photos of the air outlet, floor debris, filter and indicator lights from a safe position, and note whether the issue appears when the unit is on or keeps falling. Photos are for preliminary understanding only and do not replace an on-site assessment.
Ageing foam, insulation materials, dust and other foreign matter must be identified based on the actual parts. Do not assume that 'black dust means mould' to infer health risks or promise sterilisation.
Cleaning the dust filter may not be enough
Washable dust filters may be cleaned, safely unplugged and within easy reach, according to the manufacturer’s instructions, then dried thoroughly and reinstalled correctly. Damaged, deformed or non-washable filter elements should be handled according to the model.
Heavy dirt on the blower wheel or inside the unit may require deep cleaning; if the material is damaged, cleaning will not repair the part. Do not dismantle the blower wheel yourself or spray insecticide or cleaning agents into the unit.
Choose a service based on the inspection results
Enquire about TimesProvide the equipment location, the time of the most recent cleaning, and any dust or debris shedding. First assess the cleaning scope, parts, and accessibility for the work, then confirm the fee.
If family members have persistent coughing, wheezing, or other discomfort, please consult medical professionals; air conditioner cleaning is not a medical diagnosis or treatment, and it does not guarantee the elimination of all indoor allergens.
