Coughing when the AC is on: environmental maintenance is not a diagnosis or treatment
Contents
Filter cleaning, internal dirt removal and refrigerant fault checking are different tasks. Odour or poor cooling cannot be used to directly diagnose mould or low refrigerant. When making an enquiry, provide the model and the symptoms so staff can route it properly; do not assume the AC is toxic just because you feel unwell.
The hygiene condition inside the air conditioner directly affects the quality of the air being blown out. If mould or dust accumulates inside the unit, it not only reduces cooling efficiency, but may also affect the hygiene of the indoor environment. The equipment condition should be checked regularly and professional cleaning should be considered.
Watch for built-up dirt, dampness and drainage sources
Cooling may form condensation on the evaporator surface, which should be carried away by the drainage system; how dry the unit is after shutdown depends on the model and environment. It is not accurate to say every unit is extremely damp, or that large amounts of specific microorganisms have already grown.
Without sampling or testing, you cannot describe it as millions of spores being blown throughout the home. Visible stains and odours should be traced to the source, and cleaning cannot promise sterile indoor air.
Separate body symptoms from equipment inspection
If mould or dust has built up inside the unit, consider the following maintenance points:
Filter maintenance does not mean the whole unit has been cleaned
Cleaning washable filters according to the manual is proper maintenance, but a clean filter does not mean all internal parts are clean. Coughing has many causes; if discomfort continues, seek medical advice and do not treat washing the unit as treatment.
The condition of the blower wheel, evaporator and drip pan needs proper inspection; black spots cannot directly confirm the type of bacteria, the degree of contamination or which disinfectant is required. Do not put hands or tools into the air outlet; residents should only record the situation from a safe position.
Find professional help
Do not spray cleaners or fragrance into the unit yourself. Material compatibility, electrical protection, and cleaning recovery must be assessed together, and you cannot claim without basis that the impact of residues is greater or smaller than the original dirt.
If stubborn dirt has built up inside the air conditioner, it is safe and effective to have a professional technician perform a deep clean. The technician will use dedicated equipment and cleaning agents to clean the fan drum, aluminium fins and drain pan to restore normal hygiene standards. If refrigerant leakage is suspected, for example if cooling capacity drops significantly and it is not due to a blocked filter, ask a professional technician to inspect it instead of dismantling it yourself or trying to top up the refrigerant yourself. During a professional repair assessment, the model, refrigerant type and actual wear will be considered, and a quotation will be provided.
