Air conditioner dehumidifying function: how to use it and what to consider when choosing a unit.

Contents

Air conditioner dehumidification mainly works by cooling the air so that moisture condenses on the evaporator surface and is then drained away. The dehumidifying mode settings and capacity vary by model, and you cannot compare all air conditioners as if they were separate dehumidifiers.

1. How the dehumidifying function of an air conditioner works

During cooling, indoor air passes through the low-temperature evaporator, where some moisture condenses into water and is drained away; it is not the indoor condenser that condenses the moisture. The AC cools and dehumidifies at the same time, and actual performance is affected by room temperature, humidity, airflow and operating controls.

2. How to use the dehumidifying function of an air conditioner

There are usually two ways to use the dehumidifying function of an air conditioner:

  • Manual mode switching: some air conditioners have a dedicated dehumidification mode. You can switch to dehumidify mode manually using the remote control or the buttons on the unit.
  • The dehumidifying mode of different models may limit fan speed, temperature, or compressor operation, and some cannot be adjusted independently. Check the manual first; do not assume they all automatically maintain the specified humidity.
  • Whether dehumidifying mode can set a temperature and the selectable range depends on the actual model; do not apply a uniform 25 to 28 degree operating requirement.

3. How to choose an air conditioner with a dehumidifying function

When choosing an AC with dehumidifying function, please note the following:

  • The dehumidifying capacity should be checked against the unit, test temperature and humidity, and operating conditions; litre figures under different conditions cannot be compared directly, and do not represent the actual drainage amount in your own room.
  • Air conditioner energy labels are mainly for comparing cooling energy efficiency and should not be used directly as a ranking of dehumidification modes. If comparing standalone dehumidifiers, refer to the labels and test data applicable to that product category.
  • When choosing an air conditioner, you must consider the cooling load, room conditions and dehumidifying needs. Do not choose based only on room size or drainage capacity.
  • Compare the controls, suitable environment, maintenance and specifications of the actual model, and do not treat the brand name as a guarantee of dehumidifying performance.
  • Smart living: with technological development, more and more air conditioners have smart functions such as remote control, timer on/off and voice control. Choosing an air conditioner with smart functions can bring more convenience to daily life.

4. AC dehumidifying function Notes

When using the dehumidify function of an air conditioner, note the following:

  • Maintain the user-serviceable filter as required by the manufacturer, and watch for drainage problems. There is no blanket rule to wash monthly or to dismantle and clean the heat exchanger every year for all models.
  • Check the humidity meter, actual comfort level and model requirements, and do not judge on your own that the room is too dry or causing health problems just because the unit has been running for a long time.
  • In humid conditions, dehumidify or cooling mode may be used according to the model instructions; it is not necessary to use another dehumidifier before turning on the air conditioner. Ventilation should take outdoor humidity into account, and keeping windows open for long periods may increase the indoor humidity load.

Find professional help

Air conditioner dehumidification cannot solve all sources of dampness. If the issue involves water seepage, ventilation or drainage problems, the cause should be identified; cleaning the air conditioner should not be used as a substitute for leak repair or as a guarantee of improved health.

The dehumidifying function of an air conditioner can effectively keep the room dry and comfortable. When choosing an air conditioner, you need to consider its dehumidifying capacity, energy label, coverage area, and also pay attention to regular cleaning and proper use.
