What is so-called air-conditioning sickness? Separate physical discomfort from equipment issues
Contents
“Air-conditioner illness” is often used to describe feeling unwell in an air-conditioned room, but headache, nasal congestion, fatigue or joint pain alone cannot confirm that air conditioning is the cause, nor can it be used as a single formal diagnosis. Equipment service is not a substitute for medical assessment. If discomfort persists or is severe, seek medical attention.
People have different health conditions and comfort needs, so you cannot infer a low basal metabolic rate or a particular susceptibility to so-called air-conditioning sickness from gender, age, or lack of exercise. Adjust the environment according to individual needs, and assess symptoms separately if there are any.
Symptoms are not a diagnostic list of equipment faults
You may record the time, location and duration of discomfort for medical reference, but feeling better after leaving the room cannot prove the air conditioner is toxic, mouldy, or needs a particular type of cleaning; severe symptoms should not wait until after the unit is cleaned.
Do not treat traditional terms as a confirmed cause
This article is not a Traditional Chinese Medicine or Western medicine treatment guide, and it does not use terms such as cold evil entering the body or blood and qi stagnation to explain all discomfort in air-conditioned rooms. If you wish to seek TCM assessment, you should consult a relevant registered medical professional rather than self-diagnosing from an equipment article.
Sleep, infection, allergy, and other environmental factors may all require medical assessment; cough, runny nose, or fatigue cannot simply be attributed to the temperature difference between indoors and outdoors.
The set temperature and the actual indoor temperature may differ. You may adjust it gradually to suit your comfort needs, but this is not a way to judge or treat any medical condition, and there is no single prescribed temperature that suits everyone.
Environmental and equipment records that can be provided
Distinguish ventilation from recirculated air, and pay attention to odours, humidity and other pollution sources. A humidifier is not mandatory; if used, clean and change the water according to the manufacturer's instructions, and avoid blindly raising humidity or leaving standing water for long periods.
You may adjust the airflow direction and bedding to avoid uncomfortable direct blowing; whether a mask or other medical measures are needed depends on personal health needs and professional advice, not on what a cleaning article specifies.
Do not use acupressure, specific drinks, or hot-and-cold drink rules to treat unexplained headaches and pain. Medical treatment should be arranged based on the assessment results, and equipment cleaning cannot replace treatment.
Maintain the filter and exterior according to the manual; internal cleaning and fault checking should be handled by service staff. If there is abnormal noise, vibration or smell, stop using the unit and inspect it first, and do not assume all discomfort requires deep cleaning.
Find professional help
Cleaning enquiries only cover the model, dirt buildup, drainage and operating issues; headaches or sneezing are not used to determine the source of contamination. Ongoing physical discomfort and equipment abnormalities can be followed up separately, and no promise can be made that cleaning will guarantee health.
