AC TIPS & ADVICE

What happens if you do not clean the air conditioner for a long time? Follow-up on airflow, odour, and safety

Contents

Long-term dirt buildup may affect airflow and operation, but odours, dripping water, or weak cooling may also have other causes. First record the symptoms and where the dirt is located, and distinguish between filter maintenance, internal cleaning, and fault inspection. Do not spray medicine or bleach into the unit yourself.

Affects cooling performance

Dust on the filter, fan wheel or heat exchanger may affect airflow and heat exchange; icing may involve airflow issues or other faults, and you cannot judge a refrigerant shortage from ice alone. Abnormal noise may also be related to fixing or mechanical issues. Persistent abnormalities should be checked by suitable personnel, and cannot always be solved by cleaning alone.

Develop good usage habits

Handle the washable filter safely according to the manual, and do not spray cleaner onto the fins and then rinse it yourself. Adjust temperature and running time as needed and according to the model; there is no rule that everyone should use 23 degrees or run it only for four to eight hours. Leaving the fan on for 15 minutes also cannot guarantee the inside is completely dry or mould-free.

Do I need to switch it on every month in winter?

Long-term shutdown and reactivation should follow the model manual. There is no blanket rule that the unit must run for half an hour every month in winter or be cleaned only once at the start of winter. Internal dirt, usage level and existing faults vary, so maintenance needs also vary. Work at height and inside the unit should be handled by suitable personnel.

An odour does not mean a certain bacteria or mould has been confirmed. Do not spray bleach, white vinegar or other chemicals behind the filter, into the drain pan or into the drainage system. Do not mix cleaning agents. For odours inside the unit, first inspect according to the model and site conditions before deciding on cleaning or repair.

Enquire about TimesProvide the model, date of the latest maintenance, any odour or icing, and the location of the dirt that can be safely photographed. The cleaning scope, outdoor unit, and repair must be confirmed first; a single cleaning is not guaranteed to cure all faults or health issues.
