Sun and Rain Exposure for Air Conditioners|Protection Methods

Contents

In the hot summer sun, air conditioners bring us a cool and comfortable environment. However, the outdoor unit is often exposed to the elements—wind, sun and rain—which may damage the unit and affect its performance and lifespan. This article takes a closer look at the effects of sun and rain on air conditioners and provides some effective ways to protect them.

Sun and Rain Exposure for Air Conditioners|Impact

In addition to window-type AC units, the outdoor unit of a split-type AC, also known as the compressor, is responsible for expelling heat from the room. This equipment is usually installed outdoors to allow heat to be released, but this also exposes it to different weather conditions.

Sun exposure: prolonged sunlight may affect the casing and accelerate ageing of plastic parts. Choosing a shaded location or installing it in a cool area helps reduce this effect.

Rain exposure: Although the outdoor unit of an AC is designed to be water-resistant, prolonged exposure to rain may still cause metal parts to rust or corrode, affecting its lifespan. In particular, during typhoons or heavy rain, strong winds may drive rainwater into the unit, causing a short circuit or other damage. In addition, excessive rainwater may collect at the bottom of the AC, creating dampness and further damage.

Sun and Rain Exposure for Air Conditioners|Properly Protect Your Air Conditioner

Although we cannot completely prevent an air conditioner from being exposed to sun and rain, we can take some measures to reduce its impact.

Choose an appropriate installation location: when installing an air conditioner, choosing a relatively sheltered spot can reduce the impact of sun and rain. For example, the outdoor unit can be placed under a balcony or in a stairwell. Also, avoid installing the air conditioner under trees, as leaves and branches may fall into it and cause damage.

Using an air conditioner cover: buy a cover designed specifically for air conditioners to protect it from sun and rain. These covers are usually well designed and can protect the unit without affecting its operation, but you must make sure that when the air conditioner is running, the cover will not block airflow.

Regular maintenance and cleaning: Regularly inspect the AC and clean away dust and debris to prevent possible weather-related damage. In particular, after a typhoon or heavy rain, the AC should be checked immediately and any accumulated moisture or foreign objects removed.

Choose a weather-resistant air conditioner: some high-end air conditioners use special windproof, rainproof and sun-resistant designs. For example, they may use corrosion-resistant metal materials or have special drainage systems to prevent moisture buildup. Although these air conditioners may be more expensive, in the long run they may be more cost-effective because of their longer lifespan.

Sun and rain exposure can affect an air conditioner’s performance and lifespan. However, by choosing the right installation location, using an AC cover, carrying out regular maintenance and cleaning, and choosing a weather-resistant air conditioner, we can effectively protect our air conditioner so it can provide long-lasting cooling in summer.
