When to replace an AC: how to assess age, faults and maintenance

Contents

There is no air conditioner lifespan that applies to all brands, installations and usage conditions, so you cannot judge a unit as beyond repair by 10 to 15 years or any other fixed period alone. Maintenance depends on the model and condition, while repair or replacement must be compared using the inspection results, parts and total cost.

Age is information, not a diagnosis

Check the purchase, installation and repair records, and note the usage history and any existing problems. A new unit may still have installation or fault issues; an old unit that can still switch on does not mean no inspection is needed. You cannot judge safety, power consumption or remaining service life from the age alone.

Routine maintenance has clear limits

Remove and clean only the filters and exterior that the manufacturer allows to be washed; special filter materials should be handled according to their specific requirements. Internal dirt, outdoor units, wiring and the refrigerant system should be assessed by suitable personnel; regular cleaning does not guarantee that all parts will remain intact or extend service life by a fixed number of years.

Check the cause of the abnormality first

If there is dripping, poor cooling, ice formation, unusual noise, burning smell or a tripped breaker, record each issue separately and first confirm whether the unit should be stopped and inspected. Cleaning, repair and replacement are different. Do not assume every abnormal symptom is caused by dust, and do not use age alone as the reason to top up refrigerant or replace parts.

Compare the total cost of repair versus replacement

Check the inspection findings, parts availability, repair scope and terms. For a new unit, compare removal of the old unit, support, piping, power supply and installation as well. Any claim of higher efficiency should be based on the energy label for a similar cooling capacity, and not on the model name alone to guarantee payback.

Use records to support the next decision

Keep records of the model, work carried out, cleaning and faults, and adjust arrangements according to actual changes. Temperature settings may be adjusted for comfort and energy saving, but they are not a fixed way to extend service life and do not guarantee that any one setting suits everyone’s health needs.
