AC piping | Key component of air conditioning equipment

Contents

AC piping plays a crucial role in an air conditioning system. It connects the cooling and drainage processes to ensure normal operation. You should understand the function and types of AC piping, how to choose and install suitable piping, and how to maintain it, so your air conditioning system stays in the best condition.

AC piping | Function of AC piping

AC piping has the following main functions:

  • Refrigerant transfer: the air-conditioning pipes transfer refrigerant between the outdoor and indoor units so the system can cool or heat effectively.
  • Drainage: AC piping carries condensate from the indoor unit outdoors to keep the room clean and dry.
  • Protect the cables: Air-conditioning piping usually also contains the power and signal cables connecting the indoor and outdoor units, providing protection and insulation.
  • Maintain a neat appearance: AC piping can hide the connection lines between the indoor and outdoor units, making the installation look cleaner and more tidy.

AC piping | Types of AC piping

Based on differences in material and structure, AC pipes can mainly be divided into the following types:

  • Copper pipes: Copper pipes have good thermal conductivity and corrosion resistance, making them a common material for AC piping. During the cooling process, copper pipes can quickly transfer heat to the refrigerant, improving cooling performance.
  • Aluminium pipes are lighter and cheaper than copper pipes, but their thermal conductivity and corrosion resistance are slightly inferior to copper. Aluminium pipes are mostly used in low-power and short-distance air-conditioning systems.
  • Plastic pipe: Plastic pipes offer good corrosion resistance and affordability, but poorer heat conduction. They are suitable for drainage and cable protection.
  • Metal hose: made from braided metal, a metal hose offers good wear resistance and tensile strength. It is often used to connect the drain pipe between the indoor and outdoor units to help prevent blockages.

AC piping | Suggestions for choosing and installing AC piping

When choosing and installing air conditioning pipes, you should note the following points:

Choose the right pipe diameter and length: when selecting AC piping, choose the proper diameter and length according to the unit's capacity and distance. A diameter that is too small may cause the refrigerant to flow too quickly and affect cooling performance; piping that is too long may cause excessive refrigerant loss and reduce energy efficiency.

Consider the installation environment: when installing AC piping, take into account the indoor and outdoor temperature, humidity and air quality, and choose suitable materials and structure. For example, in high-temperature, high-humidity or corrosive environments, choose copper pipes or plastic pipes with good corrosion resistance.

Follow installation standards: When installing AC pipes, follow the relevant installation standards and requirements to ensure the pipes are firmly and stably installed. Also, avoid excessive bending and folding to prevent pipe damage and reduced cooling performance.

Maintain good insulation performance: To reduce heat loss from refrigerant in the piping, the air-conditioning pipes should be properly insulated. Use dedicated insulating materials to wrap the pipes, or install insulation boards to achieve the desired effect.

AC piping | Maintenance and care of AC piping

To ensure proper operation and extend the service life of AC piping, the following maintenance and care should be carried out regularly:

Regularly inspect the pipes: Check the appearance and condition of the air-conditioner pipes regularly. If cracks, deformation or corrosion are found, the damaged pipes should be replaced promptly.

First distinguish the refrigerant copper pipe from the drain pipe. If a drain blockage is suspected, ask the service staff to identify the cause. Do not use tools to unblock, flush, disconnect or handle the refrigerant system yourself; confirm cleaning and repair as separate items first.

Protect the power and signal cables: Ensure the power and signal cables inside the air-conditioning piping are intact to avoid faults caused by wiring problems. If damage is found, repairs or replacement should be arranged promptly.

Maintain the insulation layer: check the insulation on the AC pipes to ensure it is intact. If the insulation is damaged or falling off, repair or replace it promptly to maintain good insulation performance.
