If the air conditioner is not cold enough, it may not be broken
Contents
Hong Kong's weather is hot and humid, and the AC is almost a daily-use appliance at home. When the unit has been running for a while but is still not cold enough, many people first assume it is a mechanical fault and even worry that it needs repair or replacement. In fact, weaker cooling does not always mean the AC is broken; it may also be related to dust build-up, blocked airflow, poor heat dissipation or daily usage conditions.
Dust buildup on the filter affects airflow performance
The AC filter is one of the places where dust most easily accumulates. If it is not cleaned for a long time, dust will block airflow into the unit and reduce the air output. Even if the AC is still running, the room may cool more slowly, making it feel like "it has been on for a long time but still not cold enough." If you use the AC often, live near a road, have a dusty environment, or keep pets, dust buildup on the filter may be more noticeable. Check the filter regularly; if there is already a thick layer of dust on the surface, it is worth arranging a cleaning.
Internal dirt reduces AC efficiency.
In addition to the filter, dust, mould, and dirt may also accumulate inside the AC’s evaporator, blower wheel, air outlet, and drain area. These places may not be easy to see in daily use, but if they are not cleaned for a long time, dirt can affect heat exchange and airflow performance. If the AC is not cold enough, it is sometimes not because a part has broken down immediately, but because internal dirt is preventing cool air from blowing out smoothly. If a strange smell, weak airflow, or black spots at the air outlet appear at the same time, it is worth paying closer attention to the internal cleanliness.
The room environment can also affect cooling performance
Whether the air conditioner is cold enough depends not only on the unit itself but also on the room environment. For example, if the room faces west, has large windows, a high ceiling, poor curtain coverage, or many appliances that generate heat, the air conditioner may need more time to cool the room. Some households keep lowering the temperature because they feel the air conditioner is not cold enough, but if the room has more heat sources or the unit is under a heavier load, simply lowering the temperature may not improve the situation immediately. In that case, first check whether there is direct sunlight, whether doors and windows are properly closed, and whether there are too many heat sources indoors.
Insufficient heat dissipation from the outdoor unit may affect performance
Split-type air conditioners rely on the outdoor unit for heat dissipation. If the space around the outdoor unit is narrow, blocked by clutter, or has accumulated dust and dirt for a long time, heat dissipation may be affected. Many Hong Kong units have outdoor units installed in tight locations, so heat dissipation pressure can be even greater in hot summer weather. When heat dissipation is poor, the air conditioner may need a longer time to reach the desired temperature even though it is running. If your air conditioner has clearly become less cool than before in recent years, check whether the outdoor unit location is well ventilated and whether there are obvious obstructions nearby.
Air conditioner horsepower and the space it is used in may not match
Sometimes, poor cooling may be related to the AC capacity and the room size. If the room is larger but the AC capacity is too small, or if it was originally designed for a smaller space, it may struggle in actual use. On the other hand, if the room is often used by many people, or has computers, audio-visual equipment, cooking heat sources, and so on, the cooling load will also increase. In these cases, cleaning alone may not fully solve the problem, but understanding the usage environment can help determine whether the cause of poor cooling is related to the unit, cleaning, or room layout.
Drainage and moisture issues are also worth noting
An air conditioner removes moisture from the air while running and drains it through the drainage system. If the internal moisture, dirt, or drainage area is not handled properly, the unit may develop odors, dripping water, or reduced dehumidifying performance. Hong Kong weather is humid, so even if the temperature drops, the room may still feel stuffy or sticky, making it seem as if the air conditioner is not cooling enough. If the room still feels warm and humid after the air conditioner is turned on, or if the room is not dry enough, pay attention to both the dehumidifying performance and the internal cleanliness of the unit.
DIY cleaning may not reach deep areas
Cleaning the filter and casing yourself helps keep the air conditioner basically tidy, but may not address deeper parts such as the blower wheel, evaporator and drain tray. If the unit only has surface dust, basic cleaning may be enough. But if it has not had a deep clean for a long time, or if problems such as weak cooling, odour, dripping water or weak airflow have already appeared, a more detailed inspection may be needed. When cleaning the air conditioner, do not dismantle unfamiliar parts casually, so as not to affect the structure of the unit or cause other problems.
Seek help from a professional team
There can be many reasons an AC is not cold enough, and it is not necessarily a broken unit. If the AC has been used for some time, or if there are odours, dripping, weak airflow or similar issues, you can seek inspection from a professional team. Professional cleaning services will handle the filter, evaporator and blower wheel according to the AC type and actual condition.
