Split units and window units: a checklist before comparing installation quotes
Contents
When comparing split units and window units, first confirm which installation options are allowed on site, then compare the energy labels and full project quotes for similar cooling capacity. Split or window describes the unit structure; it does not directly mean inverter or fixed-speed, and is not a guarantee of lower power use, quieter operation or lower repair costs.
What to ask about a window-type option
Please provide photos of the existing opening, window frame and support structure so the installer can check the unit size, fixing method, drainage and heat-dissipation position. Do not assume that an all-in-one unit can reuse all old accessories, needs no safety equipment, or can always be removed easily.
What to ask about split systems
Please state the indoor wall unit location, outdoor unit location, copper pipe and drain routing, and any accessible service points. If using existing piping, it must be assessed against the new unit’s specifications and actual condition; do not assume all dimensions, connections, and insulation are suitable just because the appearance or brand is the same.
Compare the equipment price and the installation work separately
Confirm old unit removal, basic installation, extra piping, support, sealing, power supply and high-level work arrangements item by item, and note what is not included. If two quotations have different scopes, do not compare only the final total; whether scaffolding or extra equipment is needed should be confirmed according to the actual site conditions.
Compare energy and noise under the same conditions
Check Hong Kong energy labels, rated data and original manufacturer sound test conditions for similar cooling-capacity models. Do not judge a model as more energy-saving just from its name; indoor and outdoor noise, operating modes and test methods should be considered separately, and no model can be guaranteed to be completely silent.
Leave space for future cleaning and maintenance
Confirm whether the panel, filter and parts requiring repair can be accessed safely, and whether indoor cleaning and the outdoor heat exchanger are arranged separately. Keep the model, work scope and receipt after installation; if abnormalities occur later, decide whether cleaning, repair or replacement is needed based on the inspection results, not on whether it is a split or window unit.
