Why does the air conditioner keep switching itself off? Is it the temperature control or is it faulty?

Contents

An air conditioner does not necessarily keep the same sound or airflow from start to finish. Temperature control, inverter adjustment, timers, and protection functions may all change how it runs. But if it stops frequently, cannot reach a comfortable temperature, or shows a fault light, it needs further attention.

First identify which part has stopped working

Is the entire indoor unit switched off, is the airflow weak, or can you only not hear the outdoor compressor? Observing the remote-control settings and the unit indicator lights from a safe position makes the issue easier to describe; do not go near the outdoor unit to check moving parts yourself.

When the room temperature is close to the set point, the unit may reduce operation or airflow; adjust again when cooling is needed. Different models work differently, so you cannot judge from louder or quieter operation alone whether it is damaged or perfectly normal.

Check timer, sleep mode and original protection functions

Check whether the unit is set to shutdown timer, sleep, auto or other modes. If it is restarted shortly after stopping, some models may delay startup according to their protection design. The specific instructions and waiting time should follow your own manual; do not copy the waiting minutes from another model.

If there are no dangerous symptoms, first check the general user settings and the manufacturer's instructions; do not repeatedly cut power, disable protections, or enter engineering settings to force operation. If the indicator light keeps flashing or the shutdown keeps recurring, arrange an appropriate inspection.

What accompanying signs mean you should stop using it first?

If there is a burning smell, smoke, tripping, obvious scraping noise, ice build-up, or water near electrical parts, stop using it first. Do not assume you can keep using it until the appointment just because it may restart by itself.

If the unit stops after only a short time, the room never gets cool, or the problem started after recent installation or repair, several factors may be involved. Check the settings, heat dissipation, sensor and unit condition instead of directly assuming the compressor needs replacement or that refrigerant needs topping up.

Use simple time records to help with enquiries

Record when the unit starts, how long it runs before stopping, whether it restarts by itself, and the operating mode and indicator lights at the time. Also note whether it is particularly noticeable during a certain period and whether other units were running at the same time; this information is more useful than simply saying it 'keeps stopping'.

Photos or short videos should be taken only when it is safe to do so, and dangerous equipment should not be restarted just for filming. Initial information can only help arrange an inspection; it cannot guarantee that parts and repair costs can be determined remotely. Please confirm the inspection and quotation scope first.

Common questions

Does it mean the machine is faulty if it stops after reaching the set temperature?

Not necessarily. Temperature control and fan speed settings may change operation; the decision should be made together with room temperature, mode, indicator lights and whether cooling works normally, not from one shutdown alone.

Can I keep turning the power off and on until the unit works normally?

Do not repeatedly switch it on and off quickly or bypass protection. If it keeps shutting down, the fault light flashes, or there are dangerous symptoms, stop using it first and provide a record. Handle it according to the manufacturer’s requirements and an appropriate inspection.

Reference sources and applicable scope

This article provides a preliminary guide only and does not replace an on-site diagnosis. Original manufacturer functions and operation apply only to the corresponding model; please refer to your own unit's manual. For fixed electrical installations, inspection should be arranged by a registered electrical contractor.
