If the air conditioner has not been used for several months, what should be checked before using it again?
Contents
When turning on the AC for the first time after a season change, do not assume there is definitely a refrigerant shortage, and do not turn it straight to the lowest temperature for testing. First carry out a visual and settings check without dismantling the unit; stop if there is any suspected damage. Even if it starts successfully, that does not mean all internal parts have passed a safety inspection.
Before turning on, what should you check from a safe position?
- Check whether there are water marks, visible damaged wiring or plugs, or unusual burn marks near the indoor unit.
- Whether the indoor air inlet and outlet are blocked by furniture, curtains or clutter
- From a ground-level or indoor safe position, check whether the visible outdoor area has obvious obstructions or any abnormal fixing parts
- Check whether the remote batteries are leaking, and whether the timer, mode and temperature are set appropriately
Do not climb out of the window, push out a window unit, open the electrical box, or reach into the air outlet to check. If sockets, wiring, or the unit have been flooded, damaged, or are suspected loose, stop using them first and arrange inspection; do not energise them just to confirm whether they still work.
The boundary between the dust filter and cleaning
After switching off and isolating the power according to the manufacturer's safety requirements, only remove and clean the filter if the manual allows user disassembly. See the guide for washing and drying methodsDust filter guide; special filter materials may not be washable. Do not spray cleaner or disinfectant inside the unit, and do not rinse electronic components with water.
Whether the hidden blower wheel, coils, and drip areas need cleaning should be assessed based on dirt and usage. Long periods of non-use do not mean maintenance has been completed,Deep cleaning and filter cleaningare also a different scope.
If there are no warning signs, how should the first operation be observed?
Confirm that the filter is fully dry and reinstalled, restore normal operation according to the model instructions, choose the proper mode and comfortable temperature, and watch whether the unit receives commands, the airflow and noise, and whether there is indoor leakage. Some models have a start-up protection delay; follow the instructions and do not repeatedly switch off and on.
There is no uniform test-run duration or supply-air temperature for all models. Record when the fault appears and any error code; if there is still no response, weak airflow or insufficient cooling, arrange an inspection and do not add refrigerant yourself.
Which symptoms should not be tested again?
A burning smell, tripping, icing, unusual friction noise, or water leakage near electrical areas all require the unit to be switched off first. Cut the power only at a dry, safe, and familiar normal operating point; do not touch wet switches or check the wiring yourself. How should I arrange it before a long period of non-use next time?
Handle drying and anti-mold functions, power shutoff, and remote-control batteries according to the manual. Some Daikin models recommend using the drying function to dry the inside of the unit before shutdown, but models without that function cannot follow the same method. Do not treat any drying mode as a guarantee of sterilization or cleaning.
Common questions
If it hasn’t been used for a few months, must it be cleaned first?
No. It is not decided by month alone. First check visible dust, odour, airflow and drainage according to the manufacturer's requirements. Dirt inside the unit must be assessed separately, and cleaning does not replace electrical or component inspection.
If the breaker trips after long-term inactivity, can I restart it a few times to check?
Do not keep resetting or restarting. Stop using it first and arrange a professional inspection; fixed electrical installations must be handled by a suitable registered electrical contractor.

This article provides a preliminary guide only and does not replace an on-site diagnosis. Original manufacturer functions and operation apply only to the corresponding model; please refer to your own unit's manual. For fixed electrical installations, inspection should be arranged by a registered electrical contractor.
