White mist or smoke from an air conditioner: first identify the warning signs

Contents

White mist from the air outlet may be related to moist air cooling into tiny water droplets; this is not visible water vapor itself, and it does not rule out electrical faults. If you cannot tell whether it is mist or smoke, stop using the unit first and do not go near it to smell it or keep testing it.

In which situations should you seek help immediately?

If there is a burning smell, sparks, continuous smoke, or signs of fire, stop using the equipment and move away from the danger area. In the event of a fire or immediate danger to life or safety, call 999; do not wait for a cleaning or repair quotation. Only handle the power supply if it is safe and there is no need to go near fire, smoke, water, or damaged electrical equipment.

Do not throw water on live equipment, remove the cover to find the source of smoke, or stay in a dangerous spot just to take photos. The colour of the smoke and whether there is cold air do not prove the equipment is safe.

White mist does not equal a refrigerant leak

When humid air mixes with low-temperature airflow, short-lived visible mist droplets may form. The manufacturer also explains this phenomenon for certain models, but that does not mean every instance of white mist is normal operation.

Do not judge refrigerant shortage just because you see white mist, and do not say that cleaning the dust filter will solve smoke-like discharge. Poor cooling, persistent odours or unusual sounds need to be checked according to the model; do not add or release refrigerant yourself.

What should be recorded when there is no immediate danger?

Record the pattern when it occurs, the room temperature and humidity, the duration, and whether it is accompanied by dripping, warning lights or odour. Do not deliberately switch the unit on again to reproduce smoke.

If it is safe to do so, you may keep the video you recorded earlier and the unit model number. Mist from the indoor unit, defrosting at the outdoor unit, and smoke from an electrical appliance are different situations and cannot be explained by the same reason.

Division of work between cleaning and repairs

Cleaning is for removable dirt and does not replace inspection of wiring, motor, control board or the refrigeration system. If there has been smoke or electrical abnormalities, first confirm whether the unit is suitable for use and the service method, then discuss cleaning.

Enquire about AvailableExplain the equipment location, model, and any warning signs that have appeared. Whether parts, repair, or replacement are needed will be decided based on inspection and quotation; no promise that a single cleaning will restore normal operation.

Original manufacturer functions and operation apply only to the corresponding model; please refer to your own unit's manual. For fixed electrical installations, inspection should be arranged by a registered electrical contractor.
