Air conditioner compressor will not start: symptoms cannot replace testing

Contents

The compressor drives refrigerant circulation, but a non-spinning outdoor fan, indoor airflow, or weaker cooling alone cannot prove compressor damage. Power supply, control, protection functions and other components may also cause similar symptoms.

First distinguish between not starting and not cooling

Check whether the remote control is in cooling mode, and note the set temperature, whether there is airflow indoors, and the indicator light status. Some models have a protection delay when restarting; use the unit according to its own instructions and do not keep switching it on and off repeatedly.

Noise from the outdoor unit and the fan condition can only be used as clues. The output of an inverter unit is adjusted, so the presence or absence of a fixed starting sound cannot be used as a test standard.

Inspection is not just listening for sounds or touching the unit

Professional inspections distinguish, by model, between power supply, control signals, protection causes, and compressor body issues, and check the refrigerant system if necessary. The article does not provide current, resistance, or pressure values that apply to all equipment.

Do not open the electrical box, short-circuit the protection device, manually spin the fan, or touch hot parts. Even after power is cut, components such as capacitors may still store energy, so they are not safe to touch yourself.

When should I stop using the equipment?

If there are repeated tripping issues, a burning smell, smoke, metal knocking sounds, severe vibration, or wet electrical parts, stop using the equipment and arrange for a qualified person to handle it. Do not keep testing repeatedly just to confirm whether it is the compressor.

Provide the model, error code and time of occurrence from a safe position, and explain whether the whole unit is unresponsive, only the fan works, or it stops after running for a while.

How to compare repair and replacement

First obtain the fault cause, parts availability and project scope, then compare the total repair cost, the new unit plus installation and old-unit removal cost, the unit age and overall condition. Do not make a universal decision based only on age or the repair cost as a share of a new unit.

Air conditioning repair does not include maintenance. The cleaning 90 days or the one-year installation warranty should not be applied to compressor repairs. Actual inspection and call-out fees, as well as any fee waiver arrangements, are subject to the current repair service page and the confirmed quotation.

Reference sources and applicable scope

This article provides a preliminary guide only and does not replace an on-site diagnosis. Original manufacturer functions and operation apply only to the corresponding model; please refer to your own unit's manual. For fixed electrical installations, inspection should be arranged by a registered electrical contractor.
