Drain Pipe Connection and Slope for Air Conditioners: Installation Requirements Cannot Be Generalised
Contents
Condensation on the indoor evaporator during cooling is usually collected by the drip tray and drained away through the drainage system. The drain pipe and the copper pipe that carries refrigerant are not the same pipe, and connection or replacement methods cannot be applied interchangeably.
A sloped drainage design is not the same as every unit needing to be tilted
Gravity drainage requires a suitable route and continuous drainage conditions. The actual slope, pipe diameter, lift height and connection method must be confirmed according to the installation manual and site design for the model. Do not apply a fixed percentage or angle from the internet to every unit.
The indoor unit, window unit body and drain pipe each have installation requirements; do not raise one side yourself, loosen the bracket, or change the angle of the unit. Whether it should be level or require a specific tilt should follow the model instructions.
Confirm the drainage direction before connecting
The applicable drainage point, public piping and management office requirements must be checked to avoid drainage nuisance to neighbours or water dripping outside the building. Reverse slope, local sagging, flattened piping and poorly sealed joints may all affect drainage.
Do not connect the drain pipe to an unknown pipe at random, and do not use sealant as the fix for every leak. Connections inside walls, ceilings, or common areas must first be checked for access and working conditions.
Blocked pipes and burst pipes need different treatments
Blockages from dirt buildup may require clearing. Age-related cracks, damaged joints or unsuitable pipe routes may require replacement or rerouting. If leakage continues after clearing, the drip tray, condensation, icing and other causes should be checked again.
Do not remove the indoor unit yourself, use a coat hanger or high-pressure gas to clear the pipe, or pour water into the unit to test it. If water is near electrical parts or there is continuous indoor leakage, stop using the equipment first.
What should the quote and completion check include?
Please provide the leak location, pipe-route photos and any known alteration details, and confirm whether ceiling removal, wall repair, public pipes or high-level access are involved. These works should not be assumed to be fully included in a one-time cleaning fee.
Drainage and connections are checked by staff according to the model, then operation is confirmed. A new hose does not mean all causes of leakage have been ruled out; the maintenance scope for cleaning, hose replacement and installation must also be distinguished according to the confirmed items.

Reference sources and applicable scope
This article provides a preliminary guide only and does not replace an on-site diagnosis. Original manufacturer functions and operation apply only to the corresponding model; please refer to your own unit's manual. For fixed electrical installations, inspection should be arranged by a registered electrical contractor.
