Buying an inverter window unit: check size, support and energy information
Contents
An inverter window unit still needs suitable opening size, support, heat dissipation, and access for maintenance. It cannot be replaced directly just because it is also called a window unit. First confirm the model size and site conditions, then compare energy labels for similar cooling capacity and the overall installation quotation.
Depth and weight also need to be checked
Do not look only at the unit’s width and height; have the installer also check the depth, weight, fixing method, and any projection. Consumer Council testing in the past has noted that some inverter window units differ in size and weight from older models, and one test result cannot be generalised to all models.
A unit model name does not equal the electricity bill
Choose cooling capacity based on the actual room load, then refer to the Hong Kong energy label, rated data, and usage needs. Inverter control does not mean every room, setting, or operating time saves the same percentage; do not apply the average test result of one batch of models to a new unit that has not been compared.
Special venues are designed separately
For laboratories, server rooms or places with specific temperature, humidity and backup requirements, first explain the environment and operating needs, then assess according to the engineering design. The name or promotion of a typical home inverter window unit does not directly prove it is suitable for hospitals, data centres or precision temperature-control use.
Future maintenance must be safe to carry out
Confirm that the filter can be removed in the original manufacturer’s way, whether the unit can be safely serviced, and the arrangements with management and for high-level work. Do not move the unit yourself or adjust the bracket; the quote should also state clearly whether relocation, cleaning and repairs are charged separately.
Keep the specifications and work confirmation
Keep the selected model, dimensions, installation scope, receipt and warranty information. After replacement, maintenance should still follow the original manufacturer’s instructions and the actual amount of dust present; do not assume that inverter or self-cleaning functions mean no cleaning is needed, no faults will occur, or the service life will definitely be extended.
