Rain or typhoon water ingress into the air conditioner: distinguish normal operation in rain from leakage
Contents
A properly installed outdoor unit in a suitable outdoor environment is different from a case where indoor components or damaged wiring get wet. You cannot use the fact that an AC can be turned on in the rain to conclude that it is still safe after water ingress from a typhoon, flooding or bracket damage.
First check where the water is coming from
If the window frame or wall edge only leaks during wind and rain, while water drips from inside the unit during cooling, different inspections may be needed. Note the location and when it appears; do not assume a blocked drain pipe just because there is water.
Condensate usually comes from the indoor evaporator during cooling, while rainwater infiltration may also involve seals, window frames or the building. Cleaning cannot replace all waterproofing repairs.
If it gets wet or damaged, do not switch it on to test it
If the indoor unit, socket, wiring or control components get wet, or if a breaker trips, there is a burning smell or smoke appears, stop using the equipment and do not touch wet switches or electrical appliances. Only handle the power supply when it is safe to do so.
Do not dry it with a hair dryer and then reconnect power, and do not repeatedly reset and test it. Whether it can be put back into use must be confirmed by a qualified person after inspection.
Do not go out for emergency repairs during a typhoon.
Do not lean out of the window, move the outdoor unit, climb the ladder to seal gaps, or install a temporary cover. A cover may affect heat dissipation or create a falling-object risk, and you must not wrap the entire running unit with tape yourself.
If the frame is loose or there is a risk of falling objects, stay away and notify the management office; if there is an immediate public safety or personal danger, seek emergency help.
How to arrange an inspection after a typhoon
Provide the leak location, whether there was any tripping, the equipment model and any existing photos from a safe position. Issues involving window frames, external walls or public pipes need to be coordinated with the owner or management office for the relevant works.
Confirm the scope and quote for inspection, cleaning, sealing or parts replacement. Do not assume that because it stopped leaking after the rain, all hidden damage has been ruled out.

This article provides a preliminary guide only and does not replace an on-site diagnosis. Original manufacturer functions and operation apply only to the corresponding model; please refer to your own unit's manual. For fixed electrical installations, inspection should be arranged by a registered electrical contractor.
