Before installing an AC draft blocker: check mounting, blocked airflow, and condensation

Contents

If you want to avoid direct cold air blowing at you, first try the original air deflector and fan-speed settings. If you are considering an extra wind blocker, check the model, fixing method, louvre movement and whether it blocks the airflow; accessories can only change the local airflow direction and cannot guarantee energy savings, improved health, or prevent condensation.

First try the unit's original airflow direction; extra accessories may not be necessary.

Different air-conditioner models have different vane movement, sensors, and air outlet designs. Not all wind deflectors should be installed above the air outlet. Adjust the direction according to the model instructions first. If the original manufacturer does not allow extra accessories or any obstruction of the air outlet, do not force installation.

What should be checked on accessory labels?

ViewApplicable models, dimensions, weight, fixing method and usage restrictions. The names of plastic, metal or insulation materials do not in themselves mean they are more energy-saving, eco-friendly or durable; corresponding product information is required.

Five checks before installation

Check the following items from a position that is safe to access; if it is not safe to operate, ask the appropriate person for help, and do not reach for parts or dismantle the unit.

Size: do not block the air outlet, return air inlet, sensors, or the opening and closing position of the front panel, and leave enough space for the original louvres to move.

Fixing: confirm the fixing method according to the accessories and AC instructions; do not assume suction cups, adhesive pads or magnets are suitable for every casing.

Condensation: If water droplets appear or drip downward after installation, stop using the unit and remove unsuitable accessories first; if dripping keeps recurring, check the cause rather than catching the water with a wind shield.

Operation: check whether any parts are loose, making abnormal sounds, or being hit by the fan blades; stop using the unit if anything is abnormal, and do not rely on extra taping instead of checking compatibility.

Factory requirement: if the manual or maintenance terms restrict add-on accessories, confirm with the manufacturer first; brand reputation does not guarantee compatibility or after-sales coverage.

Do not drill into the unit for a wind deflector.

Installation may only be carried out according to product instructions that are clearly compatible; a general set of steps cannot be applied to all air conditioners.

After shutdown, check the visible casing from a safe position as instructed; do not insert brushes or liquids into the unit.

First check whether accessories affect the fan blades, return air and cleaning access space; do not measure only the outlet length.

Do not drill into the casing or add screws yourself, and do not open the casing to look for fixing points. If it cannot be secured according to the compatible product instructions, do not install it.

Once the fixing method is suitable, check that accessories do not obstruct the original blades and panel, and test the unit according to the instructions.

If there is looseness, unusual noise, dripping, or poorer cooling, stop using the accessory and determine the cause; do not keep adjusting it to hide the abnormality.

The key points for a deflector are compatibility, secure fixing and not interfering with the unit's original design. If the existing airflow settings already improve direct blowing, there is no need to modify the AC just for the accessory.
